Why Now is the Perfect Time to Start Taking Music Lessons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.
Do you find yourself wishing you had something fun you could be doing that isn’t homework, watching TV, eating or taking a nap? Have you ever thought about learning to play an instrument? Now is a great opportunity to give it a try and see if it’s for you! Playing an instrument is a skill you will be able to use the rest of your life, so it is worth investing the time especially now when you have a little extra to spare.

1. You Have The Time

Usually whenever we want to try something new, we have to make choices and say “no” because we don’t have enough time. Well right now, time is at your fingertips and a lot of you are looking for something to do, so why not fill some of your time with some fun music lessons! This is a great time to learn new things and find a new hobby. It also gives you something to look forward to during the week since you can count down the days until your next lesson!

2. You Get To Start Learning From the Comfort of Your Own Home

Now the real treat is that you don’t even have to get out of bed or change out of your pijamas if you don’t want to. All you have to do is hop on FaceTime or Zoom and there you are with your lesson teacher ready to play some music. I promise, we don’t judge attire because we are rocking the “hoodie-and-no-makeup-look,” too!

3. Music Is the Best Medicine

If you, or someone you care about, are really struggling with this time right now, music is a great way to start the healing process. It makes us smile, dance, reminisce, think and appreciate the little things about life that really make us whole. Music completes ourselves and can fill our lives with the sound of joy. How cool would it be if you could make that music yourself??

4. A Friendly Face

We have limited visits and even contact with people to the point where we miss seeing people and hearing their voices. We miss socializing and everything that goes with it. With a weekly lesson, you get an extra friendly face in your day to give you a break from the ones you see on a regular basis. This friendly face also holds a ton of knowledge and advice. Your lesson teacher can become a new rock in your life and will be way more interactive and personal than just trying to learn from YouTube videos.

5. Free Therapy & Entertainment

Music has an amazing way of calming or energizing us, especially when we are going through a tough situation. Listening to music is one thing, but playing it yourself takes it to a different level. Learning to play even a couple simple and fun tunes on a guitar or ukulele can be life changing. It can also be fun for the whole family! Parents love singing along with the new songs their kids are learning and vice versa. You are never too young or old to pick up an instrument and see if you can add a smile to someone’s day.

6. It’s Been On Your Bucket List

Maybe you were gifted it for a birthday a while back, maybe it’s just been sitting and collecting dust, maybe you’ve had the instrument in your checkout basket for a while when doing some window shopping. Whatever the case is, you’ve been thinking about doing it and now is the time! Do whatever it takes to take that last step toward your goal of picking up an instrument of your choice and give it a go. What have you got to lose? Now is the time to make some music!

Peace, love & the joy of music, my fellow music lovers!
