Time to Give Thanks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Diego chapter.

With Thanksgiving on the horizon, many of us are currently stoked to be headed home with minimal work to complete. The smell of pumpkin pie and warm hugs from Grandma are always something to look forward to.

It’s pretty much inevitable that when arriving home family is quick to ask a million things from “Who are you dating?” to “How are your grades?” And let’s be honest, who wants to answer either of those questions? It is often best to keep the awkward responses to the prodding questions at a minimum to ensure that the family member is made well aware how you feel about actually answering the question.

One of the best things to come home to has to be spending time with pets. Interactions with dogs and other pets have proven to reduce stress and ease the mind and body. Participating in much needed stress relieving tactics before finals is absolutely critical to the success on exams, presentations, and other finals quickly approaching.

Arguably one of the greater things about going home is seeing high school friends. These are people that have seen you grow, mature, learn, and blossom into the person that you are today. Exchanging stories and receiving updates on their everyday life allows the rekindling of past friendships especially when those friends may be attending a school thousands of miles away.

Because seasons are not a common occurrence living in San Diego, if you live in the colder states that actually do have the season called winter, than it is often nice to escape to a colder climate and experience what a typical December is like. The best part of that, however, might actually be returning to San Diego following break to escape to the artificial summer we endure all year long. I mean who doesn’t love going to the beach in January?

Being cuddled on the couch with the pup and hot chocolate in hand watching your favorite Christmas movies with your entire family may, however, be the best part of returning home for a short preview of the holiday break. Everything is familiar: the scents, the people, the food, everything. Sometimes in the midst of this crazy whirlwind of life, it is so important to remember what matters and what doesn’t. Enjoy every second of Thanksgiving break to guarantee the rest and readiness of finals that will be here before we know it.

Born in the Bay but raised in the A. Give me absurd amounts of pasta and the beach and I will forever be a in a state of bliss.
