Lupus Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

The month of May is set aside to bring awareness to the disease lupus. According to the National Resource Center on Lupus, lupus is a “chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body.” Lupus is known for causing a person’s immune system to attack the body’s healthy tissues, causing inflammation and pain.

Lupus is believed to be caused by a combination of factors both inside and outside of your body. This includes genetic predisposition, hormones, and genetics.

It’s believed that at least five million people worldwide live with a form of lupus, so education and research is important to those affected by the disease. During this month there are many events or activities that you can partake in, whether you’re affected by lupus or not, to show support in ending the disease.

The Lupus Foundation of America has walks planned in all fifty states for those who are “devoted to solving the mystery of lupus, while giving caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact.” While participating in walks isn’t for everyone it’s still possible to help make a difference with the lupus community. “Lupus Activists” are individuals who write letters, email, call, or meet face to face with elected officials on legislation and policies that may impact those living with lupus.

While living a full life with lupus is possible, most do so in pain. Lupus Awareness Month allows for individuals of any age and background to advocate for those affected by this disease. Although there are no limitations on when you can advocate, having a month set aside specifically for lupus brings attention to the disease, and hopefully in the future, a cure.
