This week, we’ve had a lot of encounters with partner pet names. Whether it be online or in person we’ve all had interactions with cringe-y nicknames, especially when dating someone knew. Here are a few of our highlights, and what two of us latinx members think of each one (this will become relevant later on… you’ll see).
Bbygrl
M: “Such a throwback. I remember my ex sent me a meme that said “bbygorilla”
S: This is a must for any myspace kid
Shawty
M: Reminds me of any guy in the street just tryna holla at you.
S: I like it ironically or maybe if I’m dating a Soundcloud rapper. Otherwise… I have to say it’s a hard pass.
Mami/mamasita
M: Depends who’s saying it. That’s all I gotta say… or to who you sayin’ it.
S: If they’re not latin I feel really weird about it… sounds kinda fetish-y
If they are tho.. aye papichulo I’m down ;)
Mi amor
M: I don’t think I’ve ever dated anyone that hispanic for them to say this to me. Just reminds me of my parents saying this to me.
S: I like it because it also reminds me of my mom, and I think it’s just sweet and traditional.
M: It’s a term of endearment… I don’t think anyone’s loved me that much, just kidding hahaha. Or not.
Babe
M: Very “yeah bro”
S: I feel like it’s like something you yell at your partner in the grocery store.
M: Yeah, it’s something you use loosely.
Lil shorty
M: *laughs* What even am I? I know I’m short. Sounds like I should be in an R&B song.
S: I like it when it’s in a silly way, but if they’re serious nah it’s too much.
My girl
S: I like this one, it’s sweet and makes me feel *special* especially since I’m hella jealous
M: I guess I like it but also, makes me mad when people are hella possessive.
S: Hmm I did not know that about you.
Sweetheart
S: Reminds me of my dad.
M: Angelic.
My baby
M: Reminds me of “My Boo” by Usher and Alicia Keys
S: I think about like actual babies with this one, I’m gonna pass
Princess
S: This one’s my favorite because I know I am
M: Same. Honestly I’m twelve and just crave attention.
