NEW Allergy-friendly Vegan Protein Bar Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

I have been gluten free for a couple years, but have recently decided to try going dairy-free and have been on the lookout for healthy dairy free, gluten free snack options.

I first heard of OWYN (Only what you need) protein bars on Instagram. (Yes, I am one of those people who occasionally clicks on Instagram ads).

After following the Instagram ad to the company’s website, I saw they also offer protein shakes along with other items. I don’t typically drink protein shakes so I went for one of their protein bars. These bars are unique because they are vegan, gluten free, tree nut free and peanut free, soy-free & egg free, along with many other things.

I ultimately ended up purchasing a box of the bars off of Amazon because I didn’t want to pay additionally for shipping on the website. (You also save a few dollars on the bars themselves, and every dollar saved counts when you’re on a college budget).

The company began in Fairfield, NJ & prides itself on being comprised of only the things your body needs, nothing that it doesn’t.

The bars come in many different flavors including, Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Chip & Cranberry, Tart Cherry & Lemon, and Ginger Turmeric. I chose to start with the Cookie Dough flavor because as someone who is gluten-free, I tend to be drawn to flavors that would typically contain gluten.

The bars are incredible!

They are consisted of pumpkin seeds along with other things and although they have crumbly consistency, the texture of the seeds mixed together, along with the taste of cookie dough is absolutely delightful.

Although I was quite skeptical before trying them. When I told my roommate that they were gluten free, dairy free, soy-free, peanut and tree nut free, egg free and non-GMO, her first words were “Are they air?”

Since losing weight, I focus not only on calories, but also macros (aka Macronutrients). These bars are 250 calories and contain 10g of protein. Although this is a relatively low protein amount for the calories (based on other bars I’ve tried), the taste makes up for it.

They also contain 4 grams of fiber and only 100mg of sodium. The Carbohydrate content in 20g, but before you panic, another popular protein bar, RX bars, contain 24g in their Dark Chocolate Sea Salt flavor.

I haven’t tried the other flavors yet, but I am definitely hoping to in the future. If you have allergies and struggle finding yummy on-the-go snacks, I definitely recommend giving these a shot! They’re super easy to throw in your bag for class, or to just have around your dorm.

Their website says, “We are made with only what you need and nothing that you don’t. We keep things simple while sourcing only from plants and nothing else. We milk plants, not cows. What could be better than thinking of some happy and relaxed animals?”

The one issue I have with them is that the price is quite steep. For a box of 12 bars on their website, it is $29.88 and on Amazon I paid $26. I know this is a steep price, but in a world filled with processed foods and artificial ingredients, you get what you pay for.
