How To Pour It Up But Keep Your Weight Down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

Drinking beer and mixed drinks high in calories are major contributing factors to college weight gain. “The Freshman Fifteen,” “The Sophomore Twenty”…does the number continue to go up from here? No. In fact, it is possible to avoid this unnerving weight gain altogether. For starters, opt for a low-cal version of your favorite drink next pregame. Below are a few simple drink recipes with easy-to-find ingredients. Try them and enjoy!

Drink Recipes:

1.       If you like Pina Coladas…

Your typical Pina Colada has over 500 calories and almost 17 g of fat! Not your idea of something you want to be drinking while trying to show off your bikini bod, right? Try this recipe instead:

             1 ½ ounces coconut-flavored rum

             3 ounces pineapple juice

             4 ounces sparkling water

1 tablespoon of Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut Lite

(Can be found in drink mixers section of your local supermarket)

              Cals: 165

2. Mimosas in the morning? Don’t mind if I do:

2 ounces Minute Maid Light Orange Tangerine Juice

               4 ounces champagne

1-2 ounces of freshly squeezed orange juice

                Cals: 120

3.       She wore a raspberry beret…and drank a raspberry cocktail:

                ½ cup ice cubes

8 ounces Minute Maid Light Raspberry Passion

                1 ½ ounces of vodka

                Blend

                Cals: 115

Best on the Shelf:

1. Skinnygirl Margarita

Everyone is always down for a margarita from Taco Loco. However, margaritas are far from a low-cal option. A traditional margarita is made with tequila, triple sec, and margarita mix. Per 1.5 oz., tequila has about 100 calories and triple sec has about 110 calories. Margarita mix has about 15-25 calories per ounce. If we put these three ingredients together, that’s one high calorie drink. Skinnygirl Margarita, on the other hand, only has 37.5 calories per 1.5 oz.! Drink up without the guilt!

2. Smirnoff Sorbet Light

A typical shot of vodka is about 100 calories, but Smirnoff sorbet light is only 78 calories per 1.5 ounce shot.  So cups in the air, everybody let’s take SHOTS.

Also try these drink ideas:

3. Red solo cup, I fill you up. Let’s have a party

Darty season is among us. What are you filling your red solo cup with? Calorie wise, Michelob Ultra is your best bet. While most brands are over 100 calories per beer, Michelob Ultra is only 95 calories per bottle. All the more reason to party.

 That doesn’t look like a Michelob Zac…

What to Order at the Bar:

1. Sparkling Vodka Cranberry

Dilute the cranberry juice by adding sparkling water or diet sprite to the drink. This saves a lot of calories!

2.  (Diet) Mai Tai

When asking for a Mai Tai, either ask for diet soda in place of regular or ask for the drink with no soda at all. This can reduce your calorie intake by 40%!
