Sleep is crucial to our wellbeing, our moods, and our productivity but sometimes it can be hard to be restful given the stress of our daily lives. Here are some tips on how to catch some better z’s.

1. Reduce Blue Light Before Sleep

Blue light is harmful to our eyes overtime but also has negative effects on your body’s circadian rhythm, meaning your body won’t relax when it thinks it’s still daytime. Try to reduce phone or laptop usage close to when you want to go to sleep, or invest in some blue light glasses.

2. Melatonin

Melatonin supplements are a non addictive, natural solution to a lack of sleep. My person favorite melatonin supplement is Olly’s Sleep Gummies. These supplements not only help you fall asleep, but they allow your body to have better restful sleep. Take your supplement of choice anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour before bed.

3. Create a Restful Environment

Make sure that your room is a place where you feel safe and restful. Create ambient noise through things like fans, humidifiers, etc. if that helps you fall asleep. Try changing the space around your bed to accommodate a routine before you try to fall asleep. It sounds obvious but oftentimes little things in our space such as too much light or clutter make us restless and prevent us from getting good sleep.

4. Make Lists

Before bed, if you feel too stressed or worried about the next day, open up the notes app on your phone and organize your thoughts. Create a list of what you have to do, what you want to do, or anything else that’s weighing on your mind. Taking just five minutes before bed to manage yourself and plan your next day will help you rest easier.

5. Essential Oils

Essential oils are a great way to help you relax. If you have a diffuser that hums, this noise might also help you fall asleep. Some of the best oils to try for better rest and relaxation include lavender, ylang ylang, chamomile, and jasmine. Peppermint oil can be used to help clear your airways and fix snoring. My favorite essential oils come from Woolzies but oftentimes oils can be found at stores like TJ Maxx or Homegoods for a reduced price.

Hopefully something on this list helps you relax at night and get some better sleep. Remember to take care of yourself and prioritize your sleep in stressful times.
