Ways To Be a Girl Boss In Your Daily Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Owning the fact that we have the capability of being a girl boss is so important. But you have to earn that label. Not every female is a boss bi*tch just for existing. It’s all about life balance, self-improvement, and committing to being an eternal student of life. If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to put yourself and your needs first, so that you can put your best foot forward, and shine like the boss you can be!!

Empathy and compassion:

Interpersonal skills are a tremendous asset to anyone who’s looking for or maintaining a stable career or relationship. Think about the amount of how many issues that could be avoided or problems easily solved if more people took the time to communicate with one another and consider how the other is feeling. We get so caught up in our own lives, that we forget to think about what other people may be enduring in their day to day lives. Practicing empathy will improve your daily life tremendously because it allows you not to take anything too personally, overall leading to a better general state of well-being. Trust me, it works! Before I learned about the power of empathy, I would live with such a different perspective. I reacted to people with the thought that they were spitefully engaging in a specific behavior to harm or upset me, when in reality the situation probably had absolutely nothing to do with me at all. Empathy helps us relate to one another and communicate more effectively, especially with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Engaging in empathy on a daily basis will give you the opportunity to work towards your goals, and not let anyone or anything hinder you from getting there.

Self Discipline:

This is one of the most important aspects, in my opinion of living a fulfilling, healthy, and balanced life on a day to day basis. It’s something I’m still learning to perfect, since I am a work in progress, but it is one of the most necessary life skills to be consistently successful. You may be thinking, self-discipline, meaning what? When I refer to self-discipline, I am referring to every single aspect and second of your life, because this quality always applies. Starting from the second you wake up, do you immediately grab your phone and start checking emails and scrolling through Instagram? Or maybe you hit the snooze button and harness another twenty minutes of sleep?. Self-discipline is waking up, and physically getting out of bed, ready to start the day and accomplish the many tasks and opportunities that await you. No, no one said it was easy. Discipline applies when you’re at the gym- to push yourself a little harder and a little longer. Discipline is exercising time management skills and avoiding procrastination and cramming leading to sleep deprivation. Discipline is learning to not overreact when you hear something you don’t like, because you know what, maybe you’re wrong. Discipline is happening every single second of the day- the choices you make of what’s on your plate, the time wasted on social media, the people you choose to interact with depending on whether they benefit you or not, deciding not to go to a party because you’re tired and then regretting it the next day, choosing to take the elevator instead of the steps because you feel like being lazy… the list goes on forever. This is a difficult skill to master, because none of us are perfect and find comfort in laziness and taking a “break” from our responsibilities. But the payoff is so immense, and honestly instantly gratifying. Self-discipline encourages productivity, and gives you the chance to really experience the fullness and best things about life.

Respect:

Definition: a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements. Respect starts with yourself. Respecting yourself can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Maybe it’s establishing healthy boundaries between you and a potential/current romantic partner. It could be saying no to a night on the town with friends to stay in and study or work on a project. It could be asking for special accomodations at a restaurant to meet the needs or your dietary lifestyle. Or maybe some TLC (tender love and care) once in a while where you splurge some cash on a manicure or a smoothie from the juice bar you go to for a treat. What does a manicure have to do with being a boss girl, you ask? It just comes down to ritual. Getting in the habit of respecting yourself in a variety of ways, yet regularly puts you in a position where you are easily capable of respecting and better connecting with others due to an established mutual honoring of each other. Respect will never fail you in a tough circumstance, because exiting an argument while maintaining respect, especially in the work environment, is something to be seriously proud of.

Thick Skin:

It’s no secret that you’re not going to like every human you encounter, and vice versa too. That’s okay- you don’t have to be everyone’s best friend, but you also should get comfortable with the fact that there will always be that one person who tries to put you down- whether it comes from jealousy of your successes, or intense dislike based on differing opinions. No matter the reason, it is vital to not let anyone bring you down, and to never stop working for what you desire in life. Glory and success comes with haters, but you knew that already. Having thick skin comes in time with life experiences and practice in different situations/ altercations and practice. Also, being able to respond to constructive criticism is necessary in order to improve yourself and your work. You are a boss bi*ch so own it. Do your best. Be the best. Keep working and don’t stop. And when you reach your goal, maintain it. Set another role and never seize growing. Be a role model. Most importantly, always live as your most authentic self. And love yourself every step of the way.
