Stand-Up Comedians to Watch to Destress This Finals Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

It’s that time of the year again when all college students want to pull their hair out. There’s no way to make finals any less stressful or grueling, but laughing it out eases the pain just a little. I personally love watching stand-up comedy specials and find that they’re a great way to relax. So take a break and try watching one of these comedians to help you unwind.

Ali Wong

Ali Wong just gets me. She’s an Asian-American woman who jokes about her immigrant and millennial experiences that me and so many others can relate to. Part of why I like her specials is her candor and vulgarity, something Asian women are generally not allowed to be.

Hasan Minhaj

His comedy special on Netflix, “Homecoming King” stuck out to me immediately. All comedians briefly tell a story to set-up their joke/punchline, but the way Minhaj did it was almost poetic at times. His ability to reel back it in and make it hilarious, though, is unlike any comedian I’ve watched before. He also has a show called, “The Patriot Act” on Netflix which is also worth watching. It is similar to a political night show, but delves deeper into social and political issues.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover is a man of many talents between rapping, acting, and even stand-up comedy. Although his special, “Weirdo” is quite old and his only comedy special, it’s definitely one worth watching. If you’re a fan of anything Donald Glover/Childish Gambino related, you’ll love this special.

Tom Segura

Tom Segura has that kind of vulgar and out-there humor that not everyone enjoys. But if you are a fan of it, his specials have you gasping for air. He has many specials on Netflix but my personal favorite is, “Mostly Stories.”

Whether you’re looking to get cheered up or want a moment to unwind from the stress of finals, try watching a comedy special. Most are only about an hour-long, the perfect length for a break from studying for exams. So sit back, relax and let the tears of laughter roll.
