Implementing Self-Love Into Your Daily Routine

It’s that time of year again when students are overwhelmed by papers, presentations, and midterms. When I first arrived at Rutgers University, I was filled with happiness and excitement but I didn’t fully understand what college entailed. I didn’t know that in a few months time I would find myself immersed in homework and assignments. It is every student’s goal to do well in their classes; after all, we are paying a lot for our education. I was consumed by this desire and was unable to enjoy the benefits of college. Though college can be stressful at times, we must tend to our mental and emotional health. We must learn how to love ourselves despite all of the obstacles and problems we endure.

Here are some suggestions on how to implement self love into your daily routine:

Eating Healthy

We have all seen the posters hanging up at the dining halls. When we eat unhealthily, we may feel more dissatisfied with ourselves and it can lower our self-esteem. Personally, whenever I’m busy or stressed, I tend to overeat and feel less motivated to finish my work. When I switch to eating healthier meals in the morning and afternoon, I nurture my emotional wellbeing in addition to my physical health.

Take A Break And Hit The Gym

Find an hour or two in your schedule to take a break and workout. Listen to some music while doing yoga or lifting some weights. It can help you blow off some steam and help you relieve stress or tension.

Get Enough Sleep

Start to refrain from staying awake all night to do your work. Though you may think it is beneficial, it actually hurts your body. When you take your midterm or go to class the next day, you may be too exhausted to focus.

Socialize

Many times, I find myself trapped in my dorm room staring at a textbook all night. I feel so isolated and lonely and this can lower my self-esteem. If you feel like this, find a study buddy! Find someone in your class and go to the library together to review some notes. Take a break from your studies and go out to eat with some friends. These are some ways to socialize while also being a productive student.

Find A Study Spot

Everyone varies in studying techniques; some may prefer a quiet environment while others may want to play music in the background. Look around your campus and find the perfect spot where you can stay focused on your work. Who knows? Maybe you will even meet a new friend who prefers the same environment.

These suggestions are simple and can easily be implemented into your daily routine. College can be stressful at times and though you want to do well, make sure you also take care of yourself. When you start to focus on yourself and your wellbeing, you will feel more motivated and your stress level will reduce. Hope you all do well on your midterms and remember to take a break once and a while to focus on YOU!
