Health Services on Campus You Should Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Note: For all medical emergencies, call 911.

It’s flu and cold season across college campuses nationwide. It’s during this time that we, college students, often remember the health services on campus. But there are many more services available on campus not just during the winter sick months but throughout the school year. Check out some of these health services below!

1. Rutgers Health Clinics

Did you wake up this morning with a terrible stuffy nose and a fever? Well, the Health Clinic is the best place to start. The Rutgers Health Clinics are Busch/Livingston Health Center, Hurtado Health Center, and Cook Douglass Health Center. To make an appointment with the Health Center you can either call 848-932-7402 or make an appointment online on the health portal (New Brunswick). For more information about hours and exact locations click on this link or check out their hours here.

2. Rutgers Pharmacies

The Rutgers’ Pharmacies are located inside all three health centers and work just like your local drugstore at home. You can visit the pharmacy not only to fill your prescriptions but also to purchase over-the-counter medications, vitamins, safer sex products, and personal care products. To fill a prescription you can drop it off in person or have your health care provider submit it electronically or call it in. For more information visit the pharmacy services website.

3. Rutgers CAPs

Mental health is important! That’s why, Rutgers Counseling, ADAP, and Psychological Services (CAPS) was created in 2006 to provide specialized mental health services on campus. As stated on their website, “Services include crisis intervention, individual therapy, group therapy, a variety of workshops, alcohol and other drug assistance programs, and psychiatric care (medication management).” To make an appointment you can call 848-932-7884, make an appointment online, or walk into the office of 17 Senior Street.

4. 24-hour Nurse Line

So what do you do when the health clinics are closed on campus? Call the 24- Hour Nurse Line, of course! Students can contact the 24-hour nurse line for any questions or problems regarding their health when Health Service Staff are unavailable. That includes during the evening, weekend, holidays or when Health Services is closed. The line is equipped with certified nurses who can help you find the next step when you’re experiencing a medical problem. The number to call is 1-800-424-5090.

5. Flu Clinics

Rutgers Health Services offers flu shots via flu shot clinics on campus. The next clinic is January 29, 2019, at the Livingston Student Center and The Yard on College Ave from 1-9pm. Remember to bring your Student ID and Insurance Card in order to get a shot.

Remember if you or a friend is experiencing a serious medical emergency always call 911.
