What 20 taught me

I turned 20 in January 2025. I didn’t think this year would be much different than the others, but it ended up teaching me more than I ever expected.

One of the biggest things I learned is that saying no is okay. As women, we’re often taught to be people-pleasers, but this year I realized I don’t have to be. I’m allowed to say no to things I don’t want to do. Setting boundaries is essential for maintaining healthy long-term relationships, whether they’re platonic or romantic. Saying no protects your energy and helps prevent burnout.

The second lesson I learned is to live your life. Being 20 made me realize how often I’ve held myself back from new experiences. The best advice I can give is simply to do it. You’re never going to be this young again. Think through your decisions and make sure they won’t harm you, but don’t overthink everything. If nothing is stopping you, why stop yourself? Want to go on a trip? Do it. Want to take a pottery class? Do it. Want to go skydiving? Do it.

We all hold ourselves back for different reasons, but there is always a way forward.

I also learned to go after the person you like. Life is too short to avoid asking someone out just because you’re afraid of rejection. Rejection is redirection. If it doesn’t work out, it simply wasn’t meant to be, and that’s okay.

Finally, I learned to keep my peace. Letting go of things that no longer serve you is essential. If something affects you negatively, it’s okay to release it. Whether it’s a friendship, relationship, club, or sport, if it no longer brings value or joy, let it go.

I can’t wait to see what 21 brings, but I’m so grateful for everything this year taught me.
