Michelle Alvarez: Need I Say More?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Regent chapter.

One may know Michelle Alvarez as that one coworker at the library who’s…special. Some know Michelle as a singer and musician.  Others may know her as a Regent vlogger. She’s also an international student who is involved in several Regent groups and events tailored to diversity and multi-cultural. Michelle’s heavy involvement at Regent University has allowed her grace countless with her presence, and we Regent students absolutely love her.

Degree program? Master’s of Divinity with a concentration on Worship and Renewal.

If you had to describe yourself in five words or phrases, what would they be?

Outgoing, passionate, intense, and these two quotes: “I took a test in Existentialism. I left all the answers blank and got 100.” by Woody Allen and “Once you label me you negate me.” by Kierkegaard.

How as your experience at Regent been as an international student? Are there many opportunities to get involved at Regent for international students?

From the beginning, as an international student, the staff and faculty have been very helpful in helping me adjust to life in the USA. I’ve enjoyed the experience so far. The international students meet together weekly, and we help each other out like a big extended family!

You currently work at the university’s library. What is your favorite part about being a student worker?

The best part of being a student worker for the university is meeting everyone who forms a part of it. I get to help students, staff, faculty, and CBN employees.

You also recently became one of Regent’s vloggers! What has that experience been like for you? What is the hardest part about being a vlogger? What is the most rewarding part?

It’s been amazing to be creative. I’ve enjoyed coming up with ideas and making these ideas a reality. I never knew that I could shoot and edit videos, so those have been two invaluable skills to pick up.  In our entertainment culture, there is a lot of pressure to be funny and interesting. The hardest part, I’d have to say is being relevant and interesting. I recently heard from a new student that my video helped him make up his mind about coming to Regent! I was very shocked that he recognized me, but it gave me determination to recruit more students to Regent.

What would your advice be for people who want to become more involved at Regent but haven’t yet found a group or organization to join?

The great thing about Regent is the diversity. There is always a group for everyone. Whatever your passion or hobby, I’m sure you can find other like-minded individuals to make your dreams reality.

My name is Lili Nizankiewicz. I currently attend Regent University, and I am studying English with a concentration in creative writing. My ultimate goal is to go to grad school for creative nonfiction and eventually become a writing professor at a university. I am a writer, reader, violinist, and coffee drinker. Writing is extremely important and personal to me, and I believe that it can break down many social, mental, emotional, and spiritual barriers that people struggle with. I also adore reading because that is where my love for writing began. Reading has always acted as a comforting escape in my life, and I have fallen in love with so many incredible literary characters, like Scout Finch and Peter Pan. The violin allows me to take a step back from the world of English and literature. I find the beautiful instrument to be both relaxing and challenging. I also really love coffee; it keeps me alive during my weariest days and makes me happy overall. Personality-wise, I would describe myself as introverted, introspective, determined, hardworking, and a little sarcastic.
