Spooky season is upon us which means it’s that time of year where the weather is cold and we all want to hide in our rooms with a warm drink, cozy blankets and obviously a really good movie. As a film student and overall movie lover, I’m well versed in horror classics.
The classic horror media has a long list of interesting and fun movies to watch but I’m bored with some of the big names. Nightmare on Elm Street gave me nightmares for a week and I’ve seen Halloween so many times I could say the whole film word for word. If you too are in a scary movie rut or just need ideas for a movie night with the girls, I hope you have fun with these films as I have.
Bodies Bodies Bodies brings a new wave of comedy to the horror franchise. It is the most recent film on this list having been released in 2022. This movie brings a fresh fun twist on horror classics, it is raunchy, twisted, and absolutely hilarious. If you have not seen this film I highly recommend. The film has a brilliant set up and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, it was a crazy ride from start to end.
The Craft, yes The Craft, is one of the most popular wiccan movies that has come around in the past decade but I hadn’t seen it until this year. Between the story and the phenomenal acting of a stellar cast, this movie should always be ranked on the same level as Scream. This movie is edgy and intense, perfect for those rainy October nights. From the costumes to the sets, you can practically feel the magic through the screen. The characters themselves carry a power into every scene and create what is truly a unforgettable hour and forty-one minutes.
The last two suggestions were pretty heavy and may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Practical Magic, on the other hand brings a sort of whimsy in a dark and scary season. It is the perfect movie to have on for girls night, especially since it stars the absolute legend that is Sandra Bullock. It’s more of a cozy movie for a dark night in and another classic movie I hadn’t seen before this year.
‘Good for her’ horror or witchy movies have always been a favourite genre of mine. It’s more refreshing sometimes to have women center stage in horror rather then spending most of the movie either as a joke, victim or dead within the first 20 minutes.
These are just some suggestions for fun and lighter films with friends or alone if you want to find something new to watch. There are so many horror films that have come out it is easy for great films to fall between the cracks. I’ve felt this way more then once and hopefully this little list helps to create a fun watch or some titles to add to your movie marathon.
Have a safe and Spook-ta-cular Halloween everyone!
