Dear High-School Me,

I know you probably have a lot of questions about the future. I wish I could tell you that everything will be answered by the time you reach university, but unfortunately, that’s simply not true. That being said, there are a number of things I can tell you, and I hope they can help you on your journey into adulthood.

You haven’t even begun your time in high school, so don’t spend all of it worrying about what you want to do. Use that time to explore who you are and to make lasting relationships with people. You might not see it yet, but there are amazing people in this world, people who will stand with you when you’re at your lowest and help you soar when you’re at your best. Just be open to forging these friendships, because they’ll keep you strong when you need them the most.

Speaking of the future, it’s fine that you’re still unsure of where you want to go and what you want to do with yours. When I was your age, I changed my top university choice three times within the span of four years and constantly pondered what I wanted my career to look like. At the end of the day, it isn’t up to your parents, your friends, or anyone else. The choice is yours alone. So make it a good one. Do what feels right in your heart and nothing you do will be wrong. You need to put your own happiness first.

Now, I want to give you some tips for first year. You’re going to an amazing school with so many opportunities at your fingertips; don’t let them pass you by. It’s not an easy adjustment, not in the slightest. But make the most of everything. People are going to touch your life in ways you didn’t think possible. You’re going to have adventures that you never considered, and you’re going to become a part of something bigger than yourself. You’re going to be scared at first, but trust your instincts and listen to them.

There’s one last thing I hoped I could pass onto you before I go. You’re full of hope, light, and happiness now, but that’s going to change. Ahead of you are some dark days. There are going to be times when you wish you could hide under a blanket and run away from your problems. You’ll experience pain and heartbreak, tears and hurt, like nothing you’ve ever dealt with before. But you won’t be alone. I promise you, there will be individuals you can count on to help you through the long road in front of you. Trust them.

I wish I could prepare you for everything coming your way, but the truth is that nothing can fully prepare you. The choices we make and the actions we take define the paths our lives follow. Make sure your life is a good one without regrets. I know you’ll be alright in the end; after all, I’m you. And one more thing. Enjoy the food at Lenny and Ban Righ while you can. You’re going to miss it later on.

With faith,
