Morning Pages: The Habit That Changed My Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Ever since the new year, I’ve been striving to create a morning routine that starts every day off on the right foot. From waking up earlier to drinking lemon water, my mornings have undoubtedly become more productive than they used to be. However, I recently discovered something that has radically altered the way I approach my day: morning pages.

I found out about morning pages through a friend who is super passionate about healthy living. Essentially, all you need is a piece of paper and a pen. As soon as you wake up, you write out three pages of consciousness writing. By this I mean thoughtless, spontaneous and raw writing – it doesn’t even have to make sense. There are no mistakes when it comes to morning pages, because you can write anything. Don’t worry about how it looks or sounds because nobody else it going to see it. The goal is to simply write.

While I’m no expert at morning pages, I feel as though I’ve slowly been able to bend the rules of traditional writing. I’m someone who has to think about every single word before I write it down – the way it appears, whether the grammar is correct, whether it works in the sentence. However, with morning pages, I am able to throw all of these concerns aside, and this has completely changed my perspective on life.

I’ll be the first to admit that it can be difficult and daunting to fill three whole pages of longhand early in the morning. I’m even guilty of skipping a few days every now and then. Life gets in the way and I don’t always have time to do the things that I want to do. If you’re considering morning pages and every single day seems like too much, maybe start with two or three days a week. This way, you can ease yourself into the routine of morning pages while getting a feel for the benefits.

For me, morning pages has opened up an entirely new world of advantages. I do not exaggerate when I say that writing morning pages has definitely made me a better person and has drastically improved my life. Once I complete my morning pages, I feel more centered, I have a much clearer mind and I am less anxious. Moreover, morning pages has allowed me to uncover my creativity and come up with novel ideas – something that I used to struggle with.

All in all, I could not recommend morning pages enough. It’s a habit that has brought me endless positivity, clarity and joy. Should you choose to incorporate morning pages into your daily routine, I hope that you reap the same benefits that I have, and become the best version of yourself.
