The first time I ever tried eggs benedict was bad. Very bad. It made me cringe at the idea of ever ordering it again, and so I didn’t. Whenever I would go out for breakfast though, it would still end up on the plate of the person in front of me… it was seemingly everyone’s favourite and of course, I didn’t understand why.

In 2019, I vowed that I would be more risk-taking and experimental in my life: it became a resolution of mine to step out of my comfort-zone a little bit more than I usually do (because that’s how we grow, right?). In the past few months, this goal has led me towards a plethora of intimidating, but exciting, new things – and somehow, eggs benny became one of them. I was soon faced with the realization that the first time I tried eggs benny was really just a bad plate, and that every time I refused to order it after that was a case of me missing out. Rediscovering eggs benny was surely the best thing to ever happen to my breakfast experience. I end up ordering it whenever it’s on the menu and so I’ve tried some of the best (and worst) places that offer it.

My Eggs Benny Watch will bring you a ranking of the places that have served my favourite plates of eggs benny, in order from my least favourite to the absolute best.

5.  Home-Made

Overall Score: 2.5/5

English Muffin: 3/5

Protein: 2/5

Poached Egg: (had to make mine fried) 3/5

Hollandaise Sauce: (this was the hard part) 2/5

The second time I ordered eggs benny had me a little obsessed, to say the least. As a student, I don’t always have the luxury of going out to eat whenever I’m in the mood, so I decided to try making my own! Eggs benny is definitely a recipe that is difficult to perfect, so my first time preparing it wasn’t exactly my favourite. If you’re on a tight budget or strapped for time, making your own is an exceptional solution…but it may take a few tries to get it just right.

4. Sunset Grill

Overall Score: 3/5

English Muffin: 3/5

Protein: 4/5

Poached Egg: 2/5

Hollandaise Sauce: 3/5

The eggs benny at Sunset Grill definitely feeds my cravings every time. The portion size is good, but the poached eggs are usually pretty small. Whether I order it with smoked salmon or ham, the protein is always fresh and perfectly complements the dish! While their hollandaise sauce tastes like it should, it’s definitely made from a powdered mix.

3. Toast and Jam

Overall Score: 3.5/5

English Muffin: 5/5

Protein: 5/5

Poached Egg: 3/5

Hollandaise Sauce: 1/5

Toast & Jam is known for their fresh, high-quality food. This stays true for their eggs benny! The ham is the best I have ever tried, and their english muffin is made fresh in their bakery! It is definitely the most “gourmet” style eggs benny I’ve had, but it does have a few weaknesses! Their poached eggs aren’t the greatest size, but they are made very well. For me, the hollandaise sauce on their eggs is what cost them the top spot on my list. There was very little of it, and I couldn’t really tell it apart from plain egg yolks.

2. Tommy’s

Score: 3.5/5

English Muffin: 3/5

Protein: 4/5

Poached Egg: 4/5

Hollandaise Sauce: 3/5

I. Love. Tommy’s. From the vibe of the inside to the personable and accommodating staff, Tommy’s makes all of its guests feel welcome and well taken care of. But since this rating has to be on their eggs benny alone, they hold spot number two. Their eggs benny is pretty standard (aside from their amazing protein) and tastes a lot like Sunset Grill’s; however, their eggs are much better in terms of sizing. My biggest critique for Tommy’s is that much like Sunset Grill, their hollandaise sauce tastes great but it is undeniably made from a powdered mix.

1. Windmills

Overall Score: 5/5

English Muffin: 5/5

Protein: 5/5

Poached Egg: 5/5

Hollandaise Sauce: 5/5

Windmills is home to the eggs benny that converted me forever. From their fresh english muffin to their high quality protein, perfectly poached eggs and best-ever hollandaise sauce, there is nothing that compares! It has rightfully won the top spot on my Eggs Benny Watch list, because nothing else has managed to even come close.
