5 Things I Learned During First Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Queen's U chapter.

Naps are a great thing and everyone takes them

It’s much better to take naps instead of sleeping through a lecture so go ahead, take a nap! You’ll feel much lighter, focus better and be in a better mood!

Everyone is feeling just as overwhelmed as you are

If you feel like you have no idea where you are going on campus or like you have no idea what is going on in class, don’t worry! Everyone is literally going through the same thing as you!

Eating is important!

Make sure you go to the cafeterias when they are open! I often did not know what the dinner hours were and missed dinner. ☹ This link will allow you to check the hours of all dining services at Queen’s: https://dining.queensu.ca/hours-of-operations/.

Mental health is just as important as physical health

Take time out of your busy schedule to take care of yourself. Whether that means sleeping in on weekends, taking a very long shower, or even going for a walk by the pier, make your mental health a priority. There are many resources on campus such as the Peer Support Centre, your first year residence dons and residence counsellors, who are willing to help you.

Below are some websites to help you:

You won’t really figure out what you like or don’t like, until you try something

University is the time to try everything, and I really mean everything. Sign up for clubs that interest you. Sign up for courses that sound fun to you. Check out events or talks held on campus, so you can ask questions and learn more about your areas of interest. Be curious and ask questions in class. Email the profs or go to their office hours and ask hundreds of questions. The only way you’ll figure out what it is that interests you, is to experience everything that Queen’s has to offer. If you are interested in joining clubs, here is a directory of all the clubs on campus: http://myams.org/clubs-directory/. Facebook is also always a great resource to find out what events are happening around you. You can use this link to apply to clubs that you might be interested in: http://myams.org/opportunities/.
