It’s Ok to Take a Mental Break Sometimes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

By now, the excitement of being back to school has probably long worn off for everyone, I know
it definitely has for me. Everyone is sick, assignments are piling up, you’re probably spending all
your money on some type of autumnal drink to give you 10 minutes of serotonin while you
inhale it, and that seasonal depression is coming in strong. I get it cause I’m in the exact same
spot and I’m gonna share some ways to help you stay afloat during a burnout.

I also like to take mental health days sometimes. Personally, I am one of those people who needs
to be doing something constantly so I won’t be alone with my thoughts for a very long time, but
that is not healthy. You need to take some time for yourself, whether that’s canceling your
workout class to lay in bed or saying no to a night out so you can watch a movie. It honestly
doesn’t matter, just give your mind a break. Even if that means going home for a weekend to
recharge away from your college town. Part of taking care of yourself mentally is giving your
brain a break. I am currently counting down the days until winter break so I could have a break
longer than a weekend. College itself can be such an emotionally and physically draining time in
your life and people don’t understand that, that’s why it’s important to check in with yourself and
learn to step away if it becomes too much for you.
