Are you ok?

For the first time, the answer is no. Secretly, the answer has always been “no”; “yes” just saved me from coming to terms with what I was dealing with. What I found in saying “no” is that I’m not alone; you’d be surprised at the conversations sparked from saying “no.” My first time saying “no” was literally the best feeling in the world; it turned into a whole ranting session, with well needed feedback and support. Who knew this would all happen behind the espresso machine at Starbucks?

I don’t know if this is what depression feels like, but this is the first time I’ve felt like this. I’ve cried so much in the last couple of months that it’s reached the point where I can’t even explain how I feel; it’s just different. The one good thing that’s come out of it, though, is my reaction to certain situations now. I was shocked to find that what would usually bother me, I now have no emotion toward; I’m stuck in the middle. I would say that it’s senior year getting to me or the fear of actually being an adult, but who knows? What I’m sure of, though, is that it’s made me take my focus on self-care to a whole new level.

Ladies, remember there’s nothing more important than self-care when going through a rough time. It’s what will keep you sane, and it’s the little things that count. Once you come to terms with what’s happening in your life, remember that it’s going to be ok – this isn’t the end; it just feels like it. Focus on your own goals and trust me it gets easier. While growing through this rough patch, these are a number of things that could help:

1. Take yourself out to eat.

You’d be surprised how therapeutic it is. It may seem awkward at first, but it gives you time to think and enjoy your own company in a public setting.

2. If you’re a faithful coffee drinker, ditch it for a few days.

Try some tea – it relaxes you and gives you a clear mind. It’s also a great way to start and end your day.

3. Skincare is key.

Do a couple of face masks and watch your favorite show or movie.

4. Go all out.

Devote one day out of the week where you do your makeup and get all dressed up just to go to class.

5. Eat healthy.

When in a funk, it’s easy to fall into bad eating habits but eating healthy will help with feeling energized.

6. A little shopping never hurt.

Just don’t go too overboard.

7. Download the “Eternal Sunshine” app.

It was recommended to me by a friend and it’s literally helped me get through these past months.

8. Always remember, you’re in control and it gets better.

I would leave you with some cheesy quote, but you’ll be ok.
