In an age where women have paved their way into a male-dominated society and have proven that the “fair” sex is capable of just about anything, it’s hard to believe that domestic violence is still an obstacle we are desperately fighting to overcome.
Yet, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 4 women in the U.S. reports experiencing domestic violence in their lifetime.
The issue has gotten a lot of national attention recently with news involving the Ray Rice scandal, the Super Bowl commercial and the NO MORE campaign. However, what some of you may not know is that this battle is closer than you may think. As much as we don’t like to admit it, domestic violence is happening right in front of our eyes and affecting the people around us at a rapid rate. So, what can we do? Know the facts, become aware and take steps toward prevention.
In support of the prevention of domestic violence and abuse, Her Campus Penn State is proud to announce our official partnership with Sisters on the Runway (SOTR). This national organization was founded in 2005 by three high school students and has since spread its message to high schools and college campuses nationwide. The Penn State chapter was founded by Penn State students Layla Taremi and Lauren Shearer and will be hosting its very first fashion show this spring to raise funds for The Centre County Women’s Resource Center, which provides emergency shelter, transitional and supported housing, and youth prevention education to the State College community.
We are honored to serve such a deserving organization and are looking forward to seeing how we can contribute to the awareness and prevention of domestic violence. Please view their site and like their page to learn more about Sisters on the Runway PSU, and join us in the fight against domestic violence.
