It’s that time of year when seemingly everyone is sick with something and, since it’s spring, people use the “it’s just allergies” excuse time and time again, when they’re actually contagious.
I just got back from spring break and despite battling a sickness before I left campus, I am returning to class today with another mysterious illness that I can’t seem to shake. This isn’t medical advice but since I’m becoming a professional at being sick, here are 5 things I like to do to get over a cold.
- Don’t be afraid of Uber Eats
-
I am not usually the type of person to get food delivered to me. It makes me feel bad that I’m not walking to get my own sustenance and I feel guilty for relying on another individual to make sure that I eat.
But when I’m sick, I remind myself that it’s not a bad thing to ask for help, especially when my body physically hurts. I tell myself to go ahead and order what I need to be delivered to my room.Â
Some of my favorites are hot chicken noodle soup from Panera Bread, an everything bagel with cream cheese and anything sweet.
- cough drops
-
I always seem to forget that cough drops exist. I will quite literally have a sore throat and be hacking up my lungs, while there is an easy and effective solution available to me at any store.Â
Cough drops are amazing. They soothe your throat and prevent you from coughing which, in turn, also soothes your throat.
Next time you’re not feeling well, please make sure you get some. They are life savers.

Also, please drink your water!
When I’m sick, I really do feel like SpongeBob. If I don’t have enough water in my system, I’m dried out and crusty. If I stay hydrated, though, I’m able to go about my day feeling like something of myself.Â
And water isn’t the only option. Drinks like Gatorade and Pedialyte are also hydrating, and they have extra vitamins and minerals that help me feel better, too.
- get some rest
-
I tend to be very go-go-go, regardless of how I’m feeling. I’m the type of person who finds it very difficult to take a break and take time for myself.
Even so, I know that it is so important to take breaks and rest when I’m not feeling my best. When I don’t pause to recuperate, I continue to feel worse until I do rest.Â
So, please, take a nap, watch a tv show and unwind because everything else can wait for you to feel better.
- don’t fall behind
-
While this may be a seeming contradiction to what I just said about taking time for yourself, make sure that you’re staying on top of your work, even when you’re not feeling your best.
If you’re physically able to, you can post your discussion questions and write an essay or two from the comfort of your bed. This will keep you from falling behind and having more and more and more work to do later.
With all of that said, I hope that everyone has an amazing spring season and that these favorites of mine are completely unnecessary.
