Caroline Halvorson is currently a freshman elementary education major here at the University of Portland. She grew up in Spokane, Washington, which is a lot smaller than Portland. Caroline is the treasurer of the Swing Dance club here on campus. She also may be in the running for president within the next few years. I had the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her leadership positions and her influence on the UP community.

Name: Caroline Halvorson

Major: Elementary Education

Year: 2020

Job: Treasurer of Swing Dance Club

Hometown: Spokane, WA

HC: What made you decide to go to school here?

CH: When I got on campus, I just knew this was the place for me. I really liked the energy. It is very active and yet still had its quiet moments. I also love the Portland area. A big seller was how the Education department gets you into schools right away.

HC: What made you want to apply to be treasurer?

CH: I was already involved in the club and had been an executive helper. The previous treasurer was unable to continue this year and they asked me if I was interested. I have never done a position like this before. I wanted to try something new and I really like being apart of the club.

HC: Have you participated in dance classes before joining the swing dance club here on campus?

CH: Yes. I have been dancing for 16 years in various styles. When school started, I signed up to take ballet classes here on campus. I have danced ballet, modern, tap, jazz, and waltz.

HC: When applying to UP were you looking for any dance programs and clubs?

CH: Yes. It was a consideration when looking at schools. I wanted to be able to at least take a few classes or join a club.

HC: After college would you still like to participate in dance in some way?

CH: Yes. If I stay in Portland there’s dancing downtown every week. I was a dance teacher for six years. If I can find a place to teach again I would love to do that. I like teaching beginner level dance to the younger ages, however I also enjoy how quickly you can move and the technique when working with adults.

HC: What do you like to do in your free time? What are some of your hobbies?

CH: In my free time, I finish my homework and then relax watching Netflix or listening to music. I also dance!

Thanks for sharing Caroline! :)
