How to Survive a Three-Hour Class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

It’s Monday morning. You breeze through three of your classes, and even have time to squeeze in a workout, get lunch with friends, and start on your Theology paper. You’re feeling rejuvenated and energized. However, once the clock strikes 4:00 pm, your eyes begin to droop. It’s time for your three hour class! Here are some tips to overcome the late-afternoon sleepies and conquer that three hour class!

1. Bring a portable and healthy snack

Good snack options include: an apple or banana with peanut butter, a handful of walnuts or almonds, or a handful of carrot sticks. In the afternoon, your energy takes a nosedive, and your brain is often focused on visions of a juicy chicken caprese sandwhich with a side of french fries from the Pilot House. Eating a snack now will help you concentrate in class, and prevent you from over-indulging at dinner. It’s a win-win situation.

2. Bring a waterbottle

Sitting in class for three hours, without drinking anything, can dehydrate you. While sodas and coffees may provide a caffeine kick, they can also prevent you from drinking enough water. Make sure that your bring your water bottle to class and sip it throughout. Bonus points if the water bottle keeps your drinks cold, because cold water will help wake you up.

3Have a coffee

I have found that there is nothing like coffee to keep you alert in the afternoon. For a drink under 100 calories, stick to black coffee or a cappuccino. Avoid sugary frappucinos or soda so that you don’t crash and burn midway through lecture.

4. Take a break

Many three-hour classes will provide you with a break halfway through. Use this break to go the bathroom or splash cold water on your face.

 5. Take notes

Nowadays, many professors post their powerpoints online. However, I still prefer to take notes in class, because it keeps me awake. As long as I am doing something, I’m more likely to pay attention instead of zoning out or getting bored . Sometimes the professor may also say something not mentioned on the powerpoint that’s important to jot down. Buy a nice colorful or pretty notebook to make taking notes more fun.

 6. Sit up Straight

As tempting as it is to slouch in your chair, I find it makes me a little too comfy. I will rest one eye, then alternate and close the other eye.  I probably look like I am awkwardly winking. To avoid that, work on your posture, sit up straight, and let the oxygen flow to your brain.
