Best Restaurants Near UP

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

I’m back again with some great restaurants to check out near UP!  If you’re an incoming freshman, you’ll soon learn that the food at The Commons and The Pilot House is not as great as it may seem.  After a few weeks, I promise you will be looking for some food off campus.  And if you’re currently a student at UP, this list will help when you’re searching for a restaurant on a Friday night.

Here’s a list of the top five best restaurants I’ve discovered in my first year at UP.

1. St. John’s Food Carts

As most of my friends know, I could go on and on about how much I love these food carts!  They are about a 15-minute walk from campus.  There’s inside seating which is really nice when it’s pouring rain.  There are about six food carts.  I would recommend the Blackened-Tilapia Quesadilla from Che Cafe, it’s life changing!  http://redtri.com/portland/nopo-family-hub-lombard-food-carts/

2. Thai Ginger

This is the go-to Thai restaurant for UP students.  The bus ride is only about 10-15 minutes, and the food is so delicious.  I love the curry and pad Thai!  https://www.allmenus.com/or/portland/275426-thai-ginger/menu/

3. Por Qué No?

This place has some of the best Mexican food I’ve had seen I’ve been to Portland.  The bus ride is about 20-30 minutes, and the food is so amazing.  My favorite item to order are the bowls!  Just be prepared to wait a while if you go during prime dinner time.  http://www.porquenotacos.com

4. Siri Indian Cuisine

My friends and I have recently just discovered this place, and it’s so good!  It’s located right on 23rd, which has tons of shops and is a fun place to walk around.  Although it’s a little on the pricey side, if you go with a group of friends and order family style, the bill will be reasonable.  I would recommend the Butter Chicken and Shrimp Curry.  http://siriindiancuisineportland.com/25437

5. Proper Eats Market and Cafe

This place is located right on Lombard, so it’s about a 15-20-minute walk from campus.  Although it is an all vegan restaurant, which may deter some individuals, I guarantee you it’s delicious.  They sell wraps, sandwiches, salads, and veggie burgers.  https://propereats.org
