7 Inspirational Chick Flicks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

Chick flicks are more than just sappy love stories. These movies have been there for us breakups, makeups (we all forced our boyfriends to watch chick flicks with us), and the making of best friends –because come one, it isn’t a true best friendship until you’ve seen Mean Girls together . They’ve taught us valuable life lessons; how to deal with the mean girls in high school, how to be yourself and have a successful career, and of course the classic coming-of-age stories. They’ve been here through the laughs and the tears. So here’s a little tribute.

1. The Breakfast Club (1985)

“You see us as you want to see us—in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain…and an athlete…and a basket case…a princess…and a criminal. Does that answer your question?”

This famous line simultaneously defined and acknowledged those high school stereotypes. After watching this film, we all walked away with a sense of unity, realizing no one is perfect, and that’s okay! (and we were all in love with John Bender.)

2. 13 Going on 30 (2004)

“I want to see real women are smart and pretty and happy to be who they are.”

This coming-of-age reminds us all to live in the NOW. Living in the adult world doesn’t seem like a dramatic difference from what our lives are like now, but it is! What we are learning now is what’s preparing us for the future. Keep that in mind when you’re moaning ‘n groaning about writing that paper!

3. Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)

Try not to let your jealousy of Amanda Peterson riding away on a lawn mower with Patrick Dempsey get in the way of the real message here. Can’t Buy Me Love addressed the struggle of fitting in. This seems to be true in most times of your life; middle school, high school, college, and even work! Remember to be yourself -that’s what everyone else is trying to do too.

4. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

What’s more inspirational than a powerful woman?

5. Mean Girls (2004)

“You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores.”

Tina Fey basically addressed one of the BIGGEST problems via one line in a chick flick. It’s so important to know if you want someone to respect you, you have to respect yourself (P.S. we only wear pink on Wednesdays.)
