10 Ways You Know You Go to UP

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

1. You wear more purple UP gear than any of your other clothes.

2. You double major or double minor in a language.

Maybe this an every school thing, but I feel like every other person I meet is an Engineering major with a double minor in German and Psychology. I’m personally a Political Science and Spanish double major. It’s interesting to see how people combine their passions to form a degree.

3. You prefer bike/busing/walking over driving places.

4. You prefer to just wear a rain coat and scrunch up your face rather than use an umbrella.

You can always spot a tourist by their umbrella. I don’t know why not using an umbrella ever became a point of pride, but it certainly has.

5. You’re a self proclaimed coffee snob.

6. You have a shared hatred of the University’s parking lot.

Does this even have to be explained? I will anyway because among the things that boil my blood is UP’s parking lot. When I walk to school I have to dodge cars like I’m running through an American Ninja Warrior course. And you have a class at 11? You better be there by 10:30 to start looking for parking.

7. You own either Birkenstocks or Doc Martens.

8. You have very strong feelings about the Villa Maria Dorm.

Whether you hate it or love it, you’re sure to have some kind of extreme response to UP’s most infamous dorm.

9. You use a reusable waterbottle instead of a plastic one.

10. You are religious about recycling and/or composting.

It’s not like UP is some perfect recycling and composting heaven. We can definitely still improve. But my recycling game has improved since coming to college.
