Three Reasons Why Michelle Obama Has Been the Best First Lady of the United States

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, once said, “There are still many causes worth sacrificing for, so much history yet to be made.”

For the past eight years, her optimistic, compassionate, and energetic temperament has immensely improved many of the United States’ ongoing issues. From health, to education, to the aid of soldiers, veterans, and their families, Michelle Obama’s work proves that she has been the best First Lady of the United States.

Although I could list many reasons why she is unbeatable, I will focus on three.

1. “Let’s Move!” Campaign

“We can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu. We can make portion sizes smaller and emphasize quality over quantity. And we can help create a culture – imagine this – where our kids ask for healthy options instead of resisting them.” –Michelle Obama

In 2010, she started a campaign called “Let’s Move!” to help end childhood obesity. With the assistance of the “Hunger-Free Kids Act”, state-funded schools’ cafeterias now sell healthier food to its students. Additionally, she started a nation-wide movement, encouraging kids to be more physically active. Currently, more than twelve million kids are in schools with active learning environments.

2. “Joining Forces” Campaign

“Because our veterans and military spouses don’t stop learning and serving when they hang up that uniform.  They are eager to find their next mission and use their training and talent to serve this country here at home.  And giving them that opportunity is the least we can do.” -Michelle Obama

With the help of Dr. Jill Biden, in 2011, Michelle Obama launched the “Joining Forces” campaign. By assisting health, education, and employment-wise, their goal is to guarantee that service members, veterans, and their families have the resources they need to be successful.

3. “Let Girls Learn” Campaign

“No country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contribution of half of its citizens.” –Michelle Obama

Michelle realized that adolescent girls have a scarce amount of resources to get a proper education world-wide. So, Michelle teamed up with her husband, President Barack Obama, to launch “Let Girls Learn” in 2015. Their goal is to make sure that girls world-wide can attend and stay in school. They do this by communicating with other countries, encouraging them to educate and empower young women. In addition, Michelle shares stories of resilient young women, in the United States and around the world, in order to inspire women to work hard. Michelle continues to emphasize three key facts about the importance of women’s education: education breaks the cycle of poverty, educated women strengthen society, and educated women live a healthier, happier, and more productive life.

On September 28th, 2016, I had the amazing opportunity to hear Michelle speak live. Her elegant, yet passionate rhetoric never ceases to comfort me and make me feel optimistic.

Thank you, Michelle Obama, for improving millions of lives and bringing hope back to many Americans that felt forlorn. We will never forget what you have done.
