At the beginning of each semester, we apply to many internships, in hopes that the places we wish to work at pick our resumes out of the many applicants available to them. For many of us, our internships are mini experiences that provide us with a better understanding of where we want our careers to go after finishing college. When we end our internships, here are a few tips to smoothly transition out on good terms.

ALWAYS NOTIFY YOUR EMPLOYER OF END DATE

This may seem like an obvious piece of advice, but you would be surprised at the amount of people who don’t give their notice of official end date. It may seem like a given that after three months your employer would know that your time is coming to a close, regardless, it is important to verbally, and in written form, to give an accurate date of your last day. This will come across as professional and allow for connections to be open in the future.

MAKE CONNECTIONS

In your internship, you will be working closely with your internship advisor, fellow interns, and staff. The way you interact and the impressions that you leave with your coworkers will help foster your ability to create connections to other opportunities in your field. Working hard, being punctual, asking questions, having a positive and say “yes” attitude leaves lasting impressions. This allows you to move to bigger and better things with the company’s employees.

PROPERLY UPDATE YOUR RESUME

When adding your current internship to your resume, you need to make sure that you list all the skills that you used during your time at your internship. If you organized or sent out countless emails in your three months, then this is a skill that you want to put down. These skills will look great on your resume and become invaluable in your future professional and personal endeavors.
