5 Things to Remember During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

1. Donate

A common way of supporting Breast Cancer patients and research is by donating. While not all of us can make massive donations of hundreds of dollars, most organizations are grateful for any donations people are willing to give. If you decide to donate, it’s important to make sure that the money you are donating is going to the people that need it.

Some charities that give more than they take include:

A fund for current breast cancer patients that help them with their medical bills.

An organization dedicated to helping young women dealing with breast cancer.

A California based breast cancer research program.

Uses funds to advance breast cancer research.

Provides detection, education, and support.

2. Volunteer

Sometimes you just can’t afford to donate to organizations. The good thing is that you can donate more than money––you can donate your time. Events put on by foundations often rely on volunteers to help during the events. If none of the events match up with your schedule, you can donate your time in many other ways.

Assists with the walk’s registration, logistics, and participant support.

Whether at a onetime event or as a regular, volunteering your time to support young women dealing with breast cancer is appreciated.

3. Participate

Another way to give your time to a deserving charity is by participating in their fundraising events. Make a day out of it and have fun while also lending a hand in raising awareness.

Some upcoming events this month include:

A 3-day charity bike ride which raises funds for young women dealing with breast cancer.

A noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that remembers those that fought, those that survived, those fighting, and raises funds in an effort to help those to come.

Not all organizations have their own regular events, but you can put on your own fundraiser or even host an event. Some organizations that would benefit from this kind of participation include:

4. Support

It’s hard sometimes to not get caught up in the community and energy of breast cancer awareness. You want to help. You want a make a difference. Sometimes, though, women and their families dealing with breast cancer can find it overwhelming and just need someone to acknowledge their struggle as something personal. So, show you support them, but don’t expect a thousand thank you’s. They’re still individuals going through a hardship.

5. Remember

The breast cancer movement has gone through some changes, but not everyone is aware. One big issue finally being addressed is that despite these women fighting for their lives, it’s not the women that were being cried out for to be saved, it was their breasts. Society made their breasts the main issue, and finally they’re being called out for it. So, remember breast cancer awareness month is about saving the woman, not the tatas.

This is my senior year of college and I'm a Public Relations major with a Creative Writing outside concentration. I was born and raised in So-Cal and love it so much I couldn't go too far. As much as South California is my home, I adore traveling and learning about other cultures. A Disney fan to the core you can find me watching any of their movies, or breaking my bank account at Disneyland, and if not I'll probably be reading, writing, or enjoying the Malibu climate.
