4 Easy Tips For Being Healthy at Pepperdine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

Whether you’re starting to gain the freshman 15 or you really enjoyed the food while you were abroad, keeping a healthy lifestyle at Pepperdine can be challenging. Between classes, extracurriculars, and a social life, who has time to make health their number one priority? Here are some easy ways to stay healthy while at Pepperdine:

1. Get off the shuttle

Yes, the shuttle system can be a life saver when you’re running late to class, but try to avoid it whenever possible. Instead, walking to class provides a short but beneficial workout. Studies have shown that the average adult burns nine to 12 calories a minute when walking up a flight of stairs and we all know that it takes a few minutes to hike up the dreaded CCB stairs. In addition, that physical boost can provide a mental boost too. You might find that you feel more energized by squeezing in some physical activity right before you sit in class for a while.

2. Take advantage of the fitness opportunities

Pepperdine has a great gym available at Firestone Fieldhouse, but that’s not the only option of where to exercise. Need a change of scenery? Ask a friend if you can workout at the Towers or Drescher gym. (Bonus: you have someone to hold you accountable so you can’t bail at the last minute.) Not interested in exercising indoors? Enjoy the ocean view while walking or jogging on the track. Or if the view isn’t enough, go for a run on the beach instead. Find yourself bored with exercise? Check out the fitness classes offered by Campus Rec. They have a wide variety of classes (from yoga to kickboxing) that can provide some excitement for your exercise routine. The opportunities for exercising at Pepperdine are endless, you just need to take advantage of what’s right for you.

3. Check out Nature’s Edge

Exercise is only half the battle when you’re trying to stay healthy. It’s not going to do you any good if you don’t keep your nutrition in check as well. If the HAWC is your go-to place for snacks, try switching things up and visit Nature’s Edge. While the candy and ramen at the HAWC may fill you up temporarily, Nature’s Edge provides healthier options that are better in the long run. There are often snacks that are gluten free, vegan, or organic. Or if you’re in a rush and need something fast and healthy for lunch, Nature’s Edge has soup available most days (and you can avoid the caf lines while you’re at it!).

4. Pick a PE class you love

If you need units for elective credit, try finding a physical education class you’re interested in. Pepperdine offers a wide variety of PE classes, ranging from dance to weight training. If you’re feeling adventurous, take advantage of living in Malibu and enroll in surfing! You’ll find that having a PE class in your schedule isn’t just a good way to earn units, but is a nice break from all the mental strain of your other classes. Plus, since you’re being graded you’ll have to stay accountable and show up to class.

With all the stress school produces, it’s important to keep your health in check. Pepperdine has the means to help you live a healthy lifestyle, but you need to take advantage of them (even if that means forgoing the AC on the shuttle). With these 4 simple tips, your fear of the freshman 15 will disappear in no time.
