Negativity. No matter what you do, it always seems to be lurking in the background. Unfortunately, sometimes you can’t do anything about it; whether it’s a co-worker, friend or even a family member, sometimes it just can’t be escaped. Here is a letter to the negative person in my life that I will not let define me.

To the negative person in my life,

Why is it that you see my life going well, and you decide to try to knock me down with your little comments? Why is it that you constantly feel like you have to add your two cents into everything? Why is it that you can’t let me succeed without your negativity and eye rolls? Do you like the idea of breaking me piece by piece?

I am not sure I will ever have answers to these questions; however, no matter how much your sly, rude comments hurt, they will not break me. Contrary to popular opinion, words will not break me, especially yours. They will make me strong. They will teach me to persevere and succeed without seeking your opinion. I write this article with the utmost love for you, because overall, you are just a stepping stone in my path to success. You lit a new fire inside of me that will never burn out. So thank you. Thank you for making me want to be better and work harder, if just to prove that your immature comments have only helped me be better than ever before.

You won’t break me. You won’t hurt me. You will make me stand stronger, work harder, and succeed even more than I imagined. So again, I thank you.

To anyone else having to deal with a clinically negative person, I pray you have the courage to stand up for yourself, to find your voice and to realize that anyone that is trying to bring you down is already below you.
