Midterm season can be overwhelming, especially as a new student. It’s easy to let yourself fall behind in the midst of the chaos. As seasoned Ohio State students, we’ve put together our ultimate guide to getting through midterm season in triumph.

Attend Office Hours

Making use of your professors’ scheduled office hours is the secret to succeeding in all of your classes. Your instructors are usually more than willing to make time for you. Many students don’t attend out of fear or forgetfulness, but office hours are an extremely valuable resource. Students who attend can gain new insights and information on the course material, or even hints on the exam. Don’t be afraid!

Prioritize Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep during exam season can be a challenge. The efficiency of all-nighters is a myth! Staying at the library until 3 a.m. is not only ineffective, it will also leave you feeling exhausted and impair your ability to take the exam. The best way to be sure you get proper sleep is by setting an end time for your studying each night. Your brain will thank you!

Don’t Neglect Your Social Life

Allowing yourself time to recharge with friends is one of the biggest life hacks for surviving midterms. It is tempting to isolate yourself while putting your all into your coursework, but your social life is an important part of balance. Spending all day in front of your laptop can be draining. Hanging with friends will be a nice break from your busy study schedule.

Pace Yourself

The number one rule of midterm season: no cramming! Spreading out your workload not only eases the pressure, but it can also improve the effectiveness of your studying. According to a Washington University study, for long-term recollection, restudy is the best method. This is good information to have for those of you who will have cumulative finals this semester.

Fuel your body

Amongst all the stress, it can be easy to neglect your body’s needs. Staying hydrated and maintaining a good diet will not only keep you satiated, but it will aslo improve your energy. Your physical health is more important than getting a good grade. Do not ignore your body!

Keep a Schedule

Starting and keeping up with an assignment calendar will help you stay on top of your responsibilities. It will allow you to plan ahead and maintain balance. For example, if you know that you have two exams in the same week, you will be able to plan your studying accordingly.

Find A Good Study Spot

An underrated part of studying is finding a good spot. Take the time to find a spot with fewer people and fewer distractions. Getting out of my room always helps me focus. Bonus points if it has motivational vibes!

Set Your Phone Aside

Distractions on your phone are the ultimate focus killers. Using the Do Not Disturb function on your phone is key to keeping your studying in check. It can be so tempting to take little TikTok breaks, but this will only disrupt your concentration.
