You’re More Like Your Phone Than You Think

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.
Why does your mood insanely plummet when you have no food?

It all started when we went to cheer on our Ducks at a football game when, by the end, we were freezing, but more importantly, HANGRY! What sounds good when you’re cold and hungry? Fried food. Conveniently, the restaurant we chose for dinner was slammed, yet we were too stubborn to leave. As we were impatiently waiting for our food, we stumbled across the notion about how food directly affects your mood. We look around and see full tables gathered with people glued to their phones rather than interacting with their families and friends, and this sparked the realization of how similar we are to our phones.

  • Charging your phone is like bringing yourself back to life

    • Portable chargers are there for you on the go, just as fast-food chains are easy to stop and get a quick bite at during road trips. They both give the same service by nourishing and brightening your mood quickly. Sleeping is like your plug-in charger that gives you life again just when you think you’re about to die.

  • Taking a photo is like storing a memory

    • You never want to forget the little moments in life, so what do you do? You snap a photo in your brain to remember it all.

  • FaceTiming is like spending physical time with others.

    • Yes, that may be the whole point of FaceTiming, but bare with us. Virtual versus quality time is not the same.

  • Restarting your phone is like forcing yourself to take a break

    • When you overstress, you shut-down. When your phone gets overloaded, it restarts. Both instances remind you to take a step back from the situation and soak in your surroundings.

  • Looking something up on Google is like referencing the dictionary

    • Your brain can only hold so much knowledge, so it needs to be refreshed.

  • Buzzing and ringing phone is like your nagging boyfriend or bff

    • They both constantly asking for your love, time and attention.

  • Keeping tabs open on your phone’s internet browser is like having a ton of thoughts on your mind

    • Sometimes, you go back to thinking to earlier things; and sometimes, you just have to close them off like your thoughts.

  • Dropping your phone is like tripping in public

    • You have two outcomes after you trip in mid-free fall. You’re either going to catch yourself and therefore save your screen. Or you’ll faceplant and shatter your screen. Obviously, one is preferred over the other.

Believe it or not, we are turning into our phones. Don’t let its battery control your life.
