How To Score Glowing Skin in the Harsh Winter Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

The sun is setting at ungodly hours and 40 degree weather is upon us, which means winter is coming.

This joke may be old and tired, but seriously, it’s freakin’ cold outside, so here are some winter beauty essentials to keep you moisturized and healthy. You’ll thank the old gods and the new.

Essential oils:
I’m going to go on a rant about essential oils. They. Are. A gift from the heavens. It’s a great natural way to keep your skin and hair hydrated and healthy. Have any problems with your skin? There’s an essential oil for that. For the surface of your skin, I recommend olive oil and coconut oil. During or after a shower, run either oil on your skin using circular motions. You’ll notice a huge difference within days. Love baths? Some drops of jojoba oil and lavender oil into your bath and you’ll have your own aromatherapy session. Your skin will thank you for the jojoba and your nose will thank you for the lavender (it also makes a great sleep aid, burn reliever and stress reducer!)
Hair feeling brittle? Rub some coconut or jojoba oil on the ends of your hair during your shower. Coconut oil is also great for frizz if you decide to visit Florida or Hawaii for the holidays.
Scalp getting a little flaky? Put a few drops of tea tree oil into your shampoo or massage it into your scalp with your fingertips (not your nails) beforehand.
Have dry skin but still getting breakouts? Try the oil cleansing method, using castor oil or hazelnut oil and olive oil. Check out this blog post by Wellness Mama to get you started – and this goes for all skin types!
You can buy any of these oils at a health food store or on Amazon.

Moisturizing socks:
They always come in cute styles and your feet will feel amazing. These socks are infused with moisturizers like aloe, shea butter or vitamin E oil which keeps your feet from feeling too dry. They also make great stocking stuffers!

Burt’s Bees hand salve and cuticle cream:

Work at a restaurant where you’re constantly washing your hands? Maybe you’ve got a desk job and your hands are taking their toll after stuffing too many envelopes. These two products will keep your hands soft and moisturized while you toil away. If you love your nail polish, having a good cuticle cream will keep your manicures professional. These two products also smell amazing.

Shea butter and cocoa butter:

These two natural products are packed with fatty acids and antioxidants that will keep you moisturized for days. They are perfect for those with sensitive skin issues like eczema or dermatitis. It’s a good natural way to keep your skin healthy and they are also very inexpensive at any drugstore!

Water:

Yeah it’s a little cliché, how many times have you heard that you need to drink more water? But really though, what better to moisturize your skin than with moisture itself? A great way to make sure you always drink water is to always have it with you. A water bottle during class, a glass by your nightstand, and so on. If you want to really go all the way, make it a goal to drink two liters of water a day.

There are so many products on the market to keep your skin supple, but these are just some suggestions. Have any other skincare go-to’s you want to recommend? Sound out in the comments below!
