5 Times Poetry Spoke to Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oregon chapter.

Poetry used to be my worst nightmare, now it is one of my favorite pastimes. If you open your mind to the possibility of appreciating poetry, it may become yours too! Delving into poems is so amazing because the poem could have been written in the early 1900’s or in 2017, yet still be relatable. Finding the words to explain how you feel is difficult, but poetry can guide you to the words that help you understand exactly how you feel! This is a list of poems that have spoken to me, ranging from Rupi Kaur to Ernest Hemingway.

1. Rupi Kaur’s wise words on independence and inner connectedness

2. “Masks” by Shel Silverstein reminding us to always be ourselves

3. Rupi Kaur inspiring us with only 8 words

4. A classic from Robert Frost, reminding us that the simplest of things can lead to a great day

5. Finally, Ernest Hemingway teaching us that we can not experience happiness without knowing sadness
