How to Have a Shasta Staycation

It is upon us: Shasta Weekend. For one reason or another maybe you’re not able to go to Shasta this year. Maybe you have work, midterm studying, or Mother’s Day plans. Whatever the case, it’s still nice to feel like you’re having just as much fun as your friends at Shasta (or close to it). Her Campus is here to help you do just that.


1. Grab your favorite beverage of choice.

We all know the most important part of Shasta is the drinking. How else would you survive days of eating hot dogs, clogged toilets, and not being able to shower? So go to your favorite bar, or relax on your couch, and grab your favorite drink of choice. Maybe try something beachy like a fishbowl, Mai Tai, or margarita and have a little fun.


2. Put on your bathing suit or your most ridiculous Hawaiian shirt.

If you walk around campus, chances are that you’ve already seen a multitude of people out sunbathing in their swimsuits on the lawns outside of dorms, so why not join them? Grab a book and sit out in the sun. Just relax and take some time to soak in the rays in your cutest swimsuit you haven’t had a chance to wear yet.


3. Make yourself some BBQ-ready food.

Grab some steak, hamburger meat, hot dogs, or even mushrooms for the vegetarians, and put them on a grill or skillet and get ready to eat some yummy food. Savor the fact that the food is all yours and not to be fought over by your entire boat group.


4. Relax out in the sun (if it comes out)

Put on your sunglasses and get out in the sun. Take a bike ride, walk around downtown, or just lay on the grass and relax. This is your weekend, so enjoy it.


5. Go to the gym and pretend you’re shasta-sizing.

Or don’t because you don’t actually have to. But if you do, why not try some relaxing Fit Pass classes like yoga or the Hawaiian cruise class (yes, you heard right).


6. Find your favorite summer movie on Netflix.

The Talented Mr. Ripley, Grease, and Dirty Dancing are just a few classics you should check out. Grab some popcorn, stick your feet in some fake sand from the dollar tree, and enjoy!


7. Fall asleep to the sounds of Shasta.

Check out a playlist or two with the sounds of the lake to help you fall asleep. Take solace in the fact that you aren’t on a boat that could make you seasick or sharing a bed and only need some sounds to imagine being lakeside with the rest of them.


8. Be relieved that you aren’t spending $200+ on a weekend and treat yourself with your dessert of choice.

Because really, who wants to be broke after a weekend of blackouts and bad decisions? You might have a blast but there is a good chance you’ll regret not saving that money, especially when next month’s rent rolls around.


9. Spend time with your mom, or other family members, and tell them you love them .

You know she’ll buy you some food if you give her a cute card and a homemade gift. So take advantage of spending time with your mom and family while you can, especially if she’s in town, and show her you love her in any way you can.
