4 Winter Dorm Room Essentials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OR State chapter.

Winter term can be a struggle. There is a serious lack of daylight, the weather is unpredictable, and you have yet another class with a group project (*groan*). Although these are all things you can’t control, you can prepare your room or dorm with the following items to help you brave the storm that is winter term.

1. Throw Blankets

The most basic necessity for décor, comfort and pure happiness is a colorful throw blanket. Whether you need a little extra warmth while studying or you’re cuddling up for a Netflix binge, nothing compares to a fuzzy throw.

Try: Berkshire Blanket® Studio Style Throw ($19.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond)

2. Space Heater

I cannot stress enough how wonderful space heaters can be, especially when you don’t have to worry about paying for electricity. Just prop a personal sized heater up on your desk and let it heat your room (this may be the one time you’ll actually be thankful for the small dorm space).

Try: Vornado® Personal Heater ($29.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond)

3. Over-the-Door Hooks

When we think of winter, we often imagine a picturesque nature scene with a soft layer of snow, maybe some twinkling lights, and a horse-drawn carriage. Why? One word – ROMANCE. However, winter in Oregon typically means rain, rain and (you guessed it) more rain. Having hooks in your room will allow you to hang all your rain gear and spare your desk and chairs from becoming soaked.

Try: 6-Hook Over-The-Door Rack ($5.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond)

*TIP: When coats and umbrellas are totally drenched, lay a towel, t-shirt or plastic bag (something that can be washed or easily cleaned up) underneath to prevent puddles.

4. Electric Water Kettle

Is it necessary for survival? No. Is it the most convenient appliance you’ll ever purchase? YES. Save yourself the trouble of microwaving cups of water just for a bit of tea or hot chocolate and invest in an electric water kettle.

Try: Proctor Silex® Cordless 1.7-Liter Electric Kettle ($19.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond)

Other essential items to stock up on for winter term (particularly when you’re living in the dorms) include:

  • Healthy snacks such as trail mix or hummus.
  • Warm socks and gloves.
  • A sturdy umbrella to keep on hand for those unexpected downpours.

Prepare now for the term ahead and you’ll be able to enjoy the rest of weeks worry free!
