Signs You’re Just Not A Kid Person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

As a collegiate female there’s a lot of pressure to like and desire to either have kids, or eventually become a mother. But honestly, some people just aren’t kid people, and that’s totally okay. Some girls just “get” kids, and some don’t. These girls have baby fever, squeal over cute baby clothes, and when they see a cute kid somehow become best friends. However, some of us get the sweats just thinking about communicating with a child. If you’ve ever found yourself saying or doing these things, you may just not be a kid person. And guess what? It’s totally okay.

If your friends are talking about having kids and your instinctual reaction is to vomit at the idea of having a child yourself. You may be known to say these things:

“I’m not mature enough!”

“My kid would be the devil”

“I like my alone time!”

“I have too many fancy things, kids would ruin it!”

or even, “I’m too irresponsible! I can’t even take care of myself.”

You have zero clue how to talk to kids, you may even find yourself telling stories that are totally innapropriate for children. You may look at the surrounding adults and see their shocked faces, or you might make children cry. It’s not your fault, you just don’t know how to converse with tiny humans.

When you have to spend time with your cousins, nieces and nephews, or friends kids you find yourself totally miserable, maybe with stickers on your forehead, counting down the minutes until you get to have adult conversations again, away from barbie dolls, sticky fingers, and their strange children smells.

You’re pretty sure you just didn’t get the “maternal” gene, whatever that is. You feel like you have zero maternal instincts, and definitely don’t have any desire to find them.

You rejoice at the idea of going home to a cry-free, mess-free, kid-free zone and have zero regrets about your life choices. Remember, kids aren’t for everyone, you do you, boo.
