7 Reasons You Should Become a Pescatarian

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

This past summer I decided to become a full time pescatraian!

For those of you who may not know what a pescatarian is, we stray away from land animals and birds, and replace these proteins with fish, shellfish, and vegetables.

Here are 7 benefits that I have found from being a pescatarian for almost half a year now!

1. Cuts Down Your Body Fat

I have noticed that by only eating seafood and vegetables that I do not gain as much weight as usual. Even though I am constantly consuming calories, my problems areas on my body, are not a problem even more. A pescatarian diet has also allowed me to stay at a constant and healthy weight.

2. Promotes Glowing Skin and Hair

From becoming a pescatarian I have seen a dramatic change in my hair and skin! My skin is softer, smoother, and holds moisture well. And my hair grows back faster, and remains soft even after I apply harsh chemicals or heat to it.

3. A Variety of Proteins to Choose From

Many times people ask me if I am really getting all the protein that I need, and if being a pescatarian is really healthy for me. To all who might be asking the same questions, there are many ways to receive your protein than from just fish. Many beans and lentils contain a great amount of fiber and protein, and combining this with a piece of fish allows me to get my daily protein intake. Before a workout, I will even drink a plant-based protein powder to help build my muscle back up!

4. Better Mental Function

I have noticed that I am more focused than ever, and can complete all that I need within 24 hours. Before my pescatarian diet, I was not mentally focused, and I was so mentally tired that I could not even complete half of my tasks, therefore causing more mental strain.

5. Less Bloating

If you are like me, then you know that what ever you eat, you are going to bloat after. No bloating from my pescartarian diet has served as the BIGGEST benefit for me. I can now put on any clothing item, and not worry if my bloating baby is peaking through.

6. More Energy

NO MORE COFFEE!! Even though I am an avid Starbucks lover, I have found myself reaching for herbal teas rather than a cup of joe. Walking 3 miles around campus is a breeze now, and getting to class on time is my second nature.

7. Better for the Environment

Becoming a pescatarian is great for the environment! By reducing your land animal and bird intake you lower disgusting animal farms, and cruel animal practices. Also, when buying fish, try to buy as much fresh fish as you can, and at all costs avoid fish that comes from fish farms.
