We’re halfway through spring semester, collegiettes, and that means our motivation is dwindling. Fast. Here are 5 tips to help you focus more in class and to finish the semester strong!

Tip 1: Put your technology away.

This includes your phone, laptop, iPods and really anything that will distract you. If your phone is in your book bag, you’re much less likely to want to text your BFF about the cute boy that sits in front of you. Same with your laptop – social media can wait.

Tip 2: Take notes by hand.

Taking notes by hand will not only force you to pay closer attention, but it helps you retain information more easily. Muscle memory is real. Plus, taking notes with a pen and paper rather than a laptop keyboard will take away the distractions of social media and Solitaire like we spoke about earlier.

Tip 3: Get to know your prof.

If you and your prof are on a first name basis, you probably have gained a certain amount of respect for him or her. This respect will encourage you to be self-reliable and to show up for class because your prof will notice your absence. Be ready to impress!

Tip 4: Dress well to test well.

This sounds like a goofy joke, but my friends and I have noticed that this actually works. Getting ready for class and feeling confident in what you are wearing can help you have a more productive day. After all, if you are dressed like you’re ready for a nap, chances are you’ll take an accidental one in class. Trust me.

Tip 5: Surround yourself with like-minded people.

While in class, sit either by yourself or with people who won’t distract you. If you sit with your friend who can’t stop talking about the party she went to last night, you’ll probably miss a lot of important things your professor is saying. Sitting with people who also take class seriously and pay attention encourages you to do the same.

Following these easy tips could bring you up a whole letter grade. Take your education into your own hands. Remember – your success is all dependent on your effort. Let’s knock out these next few weeks!
