Having recently moved to the United States (Tucson, Arizona to be specific) my style blog is going to take a slightly different outlook on fashion. I’ll take this year as an opportunity to report back all the very best and worst trends sweeping the nation.

The first thing you’ll realise, and something quickly noticeable about day-to-day American fashion especially around the college campus, is that sport chic is a must. From Nike to New Balance, Victoria Secret to American Apparel, the girls rock trainers and yoga pants all day every day here.

Sport chic, to many, will trigger an image of sleek sharp lines and bloc bold colours. But over here it quite literally means what you would wear to the gym. The concept to us Brits may seem alien but in practise it actually makes sense, nothing is more comfort than a pair of sweats and a baggy tee after all.

The sheer choice in gym attire available over here suggests that this trend is here to stay. So I suggest you give it a go!

The main brands seem to be Nike (then some more Nike, and more Nike), Victoria’s Secret and American Apparel. The outfit above shows the trend being described.

It is no stranger to us now that sneakers are a trend highly sought after. Americans shy away from the Nike Air Max’s that plague English streets, and gravitate more toward Nike Free Run, which are noticeably more feminine. After deciding on a pair of kicks you like, start looking for a comfortable and colour coordinated pair of joggers (both Nike and Victoria Secret offer a wide range) and then complete the look with a baggy vest.

The golden rule when perfecting the American sport chic look is layering. So why not wear a vibrant sports bra under your baggy vest? Or if you choose baggy gym shorts chuck under a pair of colourful cycling Lycra’s! Experiment and have fun with fashion, especially when it comes in so many shapes and sizes.

Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
