5 Quirky Travelling Ideas for your Summer Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Most wannabe-travellers will have a bucket list or some sort, whether it’s formalized, written down or simply daydreamed up in a particularly dull lecture. These lists probably include items such as scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, seeing the Hollywood sign and embarking on an African safari, but for those wanting to add some more unique ideas to that dream-board, you need look no further:

KENYA: Breakfast with giraffes

Located in Nairobi, this exclusive Giraffe Manor is a boutique hotel set within 140 acres of indigenous forest. Its herd of giraffes visits guests every morning and evening as they please, poking their necks in to join you and hopefully sneak a treat as you snap a pic.

ICELAND: Swim in the snow

Blue Lagoon’s outdoor geothermal spa and pool allows visitors to bathe all year round in warm waters that are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur. Suitable for medicinal and recreational purposes, you can unwind in the pool, steam room or under the waterfall whilst taking in the stunning Icelandic landscape.

ITALY: Dine in a cave

Grotta Palazzese seats diners within a cave, naturally illuminated by the reflection from the waters below. Hosting the nobility since the 1700s, each table is nestled within the carved rock face, awaiting hopeless romantics every summer season.

NEW ZEALAND: Shotover Canyon Swing

An idea for the more daring traveller: launch yourself from a cliff and free-fall down 60m over the famous Shotover River with a 200m swing. The uniqueness comes from just how you choose to jump – forwards, backwards, down a slide or off a chair, it’s probably best to tell your mum after completing this adrenaline-pumping experience.

MALDIVES: Waterslide into the ocean

Soneva Jani’s villas float in the sea with waterslides descending from your luxurious suite, complete with an open-air cinema and hammocks, into the beautiful Indian Ocean. There’s also supposed to be a pretty decent spa in the resort for guests to enjoy when they need a break from the sun.

So, what are you waiting for? Get saving so you can visit some of these amazing places!
