Netflix, the Spanish Teacher You Never Knew You Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

If you are anything like me, learning a new language is a struggle. People say that the best way to learn a new language is to immerse yourself in its culture, and, ideally, this means going abroad and living in a place where that language is the norm. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend a month in Ibiza, right? But as a student, you probably don’t have the time nor the money for such an adventure (yet). Lucky for us, Netflix comes to save the day once again.

I am currently taking French and want to watch shows and movies to improve it. However, I never know what to watch and wish I could just ask a French 20-year-old to give me her top list of favorite ones. So, if you’re taking Spanish, want to learn Spanish or just want to watch some amazing content (with subtitles), you have found the perfect article. These are my top 4 favorite movies/shows currently on Netflix.

Casa de Papel – Money Heist

If you like action, suspense, humor and a vivid plot that won’t make you want to stop watching, then La Casa de Papel/Money Heist won’t disappoint you. This group of robbers has the objective of accomplishing the heist of the century. Months of preparation and a mastermind behind this ambitious plan will change the lives of all of those involved. *This is also a trending Halloween costume in Latin America (just order red overalls and the exact mask they use can be found on Amazon.)*

Contratiempo – The Invisible Guest

Contratiempo/The Invisible Guest is my favorite suspense movie. The plot revolves around the death of a woman and the incessant search of the culprit. This movie starts in the present but goes back in time to the events leading up to the death. It leaves blank spaces for the audience to make different theories but then resolves the mystery at the end with a jaw-dropping event.

Tres Metros Sobre el Cielo – Three Steps Above Heaven

This is the must watch romantic movie of every Spanish speaking teenage girl. 3 Metros Sobre El Cielo is the movie my friends and I would watch on a typical Friday slumber party. After this movie, Mario Casas (the main character) not only became everyone’s crush but his career also skyrocketed. I can watch this movie a thousand times and still smile, cry and get butterflies.

Velvet

Velvet is the type of show that you know you will enjoy when you watch it but will not make you stay up until 4 am because you need to know what happens next. Ana and Alberto (the two main characters) have a love story that never seems to have a happy ending; regardless, they fight to stay together. Behind this beautiful love story, the viewer is immersed in the world of Spanish fashion, designers and status as this is the environment that joins the paths of both characters.
