Well, ladies, another Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and some of us were left to take care of a lot more than a bouquet of roses—I’m talking about a broken heart, here. After a break up, it can be really hard to keep it together. Personally, when I feel doubt, regret, depression, and all of that fun stuff, sink in my go-to move is to pop some headphones in. When you can’t fill your head with happy thoughts, you might as well fill it with something you can dance to, right? I’ve put together a playlist to get you through the dark days: The Five Stages of Grief: Breakup Edition.
1. Denial: These are for those mornings when you wake up and, for a split second, forget everything that has happened—only to realize that nothing is the same. So stop checking your phones for a text that’s never going to come, and listen up!
“Boy” by Little Mix
“Miss Movin’ On” by Fifth Harmony
2. Anger: All of the sudden, it hits you: every little thing he ever did to hurt you. You know you deserve better and you can’t believe it took you this long to realize it. While anger can quickly become a dangerous emotion when directed at the wrong person (e.g. yourself) it can also be quite the motivator—think of the steps scene from Rocky.
“Fighter” by Christina Aguilera
“U + Ur Hand” by P!nk
3. Bargaining: Wait, what happened? Back up. Maybe you should have just let him win. Maybe if you had gotten him a better present for Christmas this year you wouldn’t be here. WRONG. Everything happens for a reason, including break ups. No matter how great it might have been once upon a time, there’s a reason it didn’t work out. Remember, you deserve better!
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift
“Irreplaceable” by Beyoncé
4. Depression: Hey, a girl can only keep it together for so long. The walls you’ve put up will eventually have to crumble as you face the reality of the situation — there’s nothing wrong with shedding a few tears. In fact, it may just mean you’re coming to terms with your new life. These songs should help you to keep your chin up:
“Stronger” by Britney Spears
“It’s Not Right But It’s Ok (Remix)” by Whitney Houston
5. Acceptance: Congratulations, you made it! Things may never be the same, and you know that. But, hey, who says they won’t be better? You’re finally ready to let go and start over—a clean slate. You go, girl!
“Bang Bang Bang” by Selena Gomez & The Scene
“Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield
