Campus Celeb: HCND Graduate Edition! – Michelle Tin ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

It’s tough to say goodbye to the people we love, and we at HCND are currently doing this far too frequently. This week’s HCND graduate celeb is Michelle Tin, an Alabama girl and one of our fabulous assistant editors. Michelle certainly managed her fair share of activities in her four years at Notre Dame, in addition to juggling the work load of a College of Science student. We love her for her real life adventures in online dating, her honesty about the gender relations at ND, and dedication to the “Pusheen” emojis in Facebook chat (those are the adorable, animated cats, if you’ve seen them). Thanks to Michelle for taking the time to tell us about her college experience!

About Michelle!

Name: Michelle Tin

Year: 2014

Hometown: Auburn, Alabama

Dorm Allegiance: Lewis

Major: Science Pre-Professional

NDH/SDH: North.

Campus Activities: Firestarters, First Aid Service Team, Loyal Daughters and Sons, STEM Ambassadors, and HCND! <3

What is the most played song on your iPod right now? Defying Gravity. I don’t have Let it Go on my iPod, so obviously this is what happened instead of downloading it like a normal person.

What is a little known fact about you? I’m pretty afraid of walking down stairs.

Who is your celebrity crush? My girl crush is Eva Green, who played the very best Bond Girl in Casino Royale. She’s such a good actress, and I love that her character was gorgeous, intelligent, and dark-and-twisty. She made a stereotypical character into a real person. Guy crush: Matt Bomer. He’s beautiful.

What three words would you use to describe yourself? Please hire me. Just kidding…but it fits!

What’s your favorite movie quote? The Wizard: “And you…you want a heart? You don’t know how lucky you are not to have one. Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable.”

The Tin Man: “But I…I still want one.”

Who would play you in a movie about your life? Kaya Scodelario.

Michelle and ND!

If you could go back to freshman year and tell yourself one thing you know now, what would it be? This is going to be nothing like you think it will be.

What did you think you were going to do when you came in as a freshman? I thought I wanted to go to med school and become a surgeon. Changing my mind was the best and worst thing I’ve ever done.

It’s crunch time! What is the #1 item on your ND bucket list that you still want to complete before graduation? Have a definitive plan for next year.

What is your best ND memory? Being a part of the student production Loyal Daughters and Sons, which is a collection of stories from real Notre Dame students about relationships, sexual violence and gender issues. I helped write the script and put together the show this year, and it’s one of my greatest accomplishments.

Best class you’ve taken/professor you’ve had at ND: Tie between Gender and Pop Culture with Perin Gurel and Dynamical Systems with Arthur Lim.

Favorite spot on campus: That concrete sitting area in front of O’Shag.

Favorite Domer – dead, alive, or fictional? Condoleezza Rice. Her backup life plan was the best life plan.

In 25 years you will be… Out of student loan debt.

What activity do you wish you had gotten involved in on campus? Almost every day, I wish more than anything that I had gotten into musical theater. Obviously, that isn’t something that just happens overnight, but I still wish I had gotten into it.

What are you going to miss the most about ND? My friends.

Michelle <3's HCND

How did you first hear about Her Campus? My BFFL forwarded me the email that Lex Lorenzo sent to the Gender Studies department.

Why did you want to get involved in HCND? I’ve been writing since high school – it’s one of my favorite things in the world. HCND is a great way to get involved in journalism, and being on the team is a great experience.

What is your current role in Her Campus ND? Assistant Editor!

What HCND article was your favorite? My favorite article of my own was probably “#NYFW: The Size Zero War”, as part of my series on beauty and the media. And of course, my hilariously tragic online dating series. My favorite article by someone else is Christine Fox’s “WhatsApp with Facebook’s Recent Billion Dollar Move”. It was perfectly timed with the news and answered a lot of my own burning questions.

What is the best part of working with HCND? I love the editorial team. I really do. I feel like everyone is very respectful of each other’s opinions and articles.

What’s your personal next step? It’s looking like I might go back to Alabama for grad school for at least the next year, and then it’s back out into the great wide somewhere.

How has being a part of HCND impacted you? Being part of HCND has definitely made me a better writer. I’ve grown a lot since I started writing here.

What would you like to see from the chapter in the future? HCND has grown so much in the last year, so it’s hard to imagine it getting any bigger or better!

What advice do you have for someone looking to get involved in HCND? Be open to the possibility of growing and improving as a writer. It’s an amazing process that makes good writers great.

You’re about to graduate from the University of Notre Dame. Congratulations! Thanks, dude.

Last thoughts?

I heart Sara Spitt AND I’M GOING TO MISS YOU GIRLS SO MUCH.

Meet HCND's current Campus Coordinator and Editor-in-Chief! Originally from outside of Chicago, Sara is a Senior Peace Studies, Theology, and Italian major at Notre Dame (yes, that is three majors; no, she doesn't have any free time). When she isn't painting her nails, Sara enjoys cooking vegetarian friendly dishes, taking pictures for The Dome yearbook, and reading for fun. Sara began writing for Her Campus Notre Dame in May of 2013 and quickly fell in love with the site and it's staff! After writing for the inagural editorial staff (shout-out to AnnaLee, Katie, and Lex!) for a semester, Sara decided to branch out and become an editor. She particularly enjoys doing interviews and sharing travel expereinces, as well as connecting with the HCND reader network through thought-provoking social commentaries.
