Why You Should Watch Cubs Baseball This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

After 151 days of no baseball, it’s the day that every fan has been looking forward to: Opening Day. April 2 marks the first day of the official MLB season and is a day full of excitement, upsets and, of course, baseball.

After winning the world series last year, thus ending the 108-year drought, the Chicago Cubs are looking for a repeat, and they might just make it happen. Despite some changes to their roster in the off-season, the Cubs are still a young and united team, if not by their love for the game, then by their dedicated fans. If their past record isn’t enough to persuade you to watch the Cubs this season, see the following reasons that might change your mind.

The “Bryzzo” Bromance

There is not a more iconic bromance in the MLB than the relationship between third-baseman Kris Bryant and first-baseman Anthony Rizzo, fondly nicknamed “Bryzzo.” Their strong relationship is clear on and off the field, pulling out game-changing plays while continuing to support each other in all their endeavors outside of Wrigley Field. The MLB even took notice of their relationship and created the fictional company: Bryzzo Souvenirs. On March 31, they released a new commercial in celebration of the beginning of baseball season that has some cameos from other Chicago Cubs players. While Bryzzo Souvenirs may not be a real thing, their bromance is and it’s amazing to see in every game.

Their Social Media Networks

Every time I find myself watching a Cubs baseball game, I rotate between Instagram and Twitter and look out for the snappy tweets and posts fired off by the Cubs social media team. From retweeting and reposting fan pictures to cranking out some funny memes, the content adds another form of connection to the team. The Chicago Cubs are so lovable because of their loyal fans and their social media only spreads the love.

They Don’t Take Themselves Too Seriously

While having the reputation of being long and never-ending, baseball can get intense. Innings, even games, can be determined by one play and it’s easy to blame a singular member of the team. However, the Chicago Cubs players never hesitate to add some fun to a potentially stressful environment. Last season, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo took over David Ross’s Instagram and posted videos and photos to celebrate his year-long retirement from the Chicago Cubs. After winning the World Series last season, several Chicago Cubs players had a cameo on NBC’s Saturday Night Live as strippers for a failed bachelor party. Not taking themselves too seriously has proved to be useful on the field and is sure to help pull out some wins this season.

So, come jump on the fan bandwagon for the Chicago Cubs and hope that we’ll fly the W a lot this year. Go Cubs Go!
