I Made Target’s Valentine Cookie House So You Don’t Have To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Maybe you were having a romantic, candlelit dinner for two this Valentine’s Day. Or maybe not. Either way, it’s fun to celebrate. I love any excuse to get festive, and Valentine’s Day is no different.

For the low low price of $7.99 plus tax, all of your Valentine’s Day dreams can come true. Target’s Favorite Day Line includes a Valentine cookie house kit, and naturally, I was dying to try it. Come Christmastime, I love a good gingerbread house, so it’s exciting to see a unique take on the beloved tradition.

The kit includes pre-cut cookies to construct the house, royal icing glue, red and pink decorating, and three kinds of adorable sprinkles — everything you could possibly need! My friend and I added our own mini marshmallows for extra pizazz, but honestly, that’s just extra.

Unfortunately, the necessary artistic ability was not included. My hands are shaky and I struggled to keep the lines clean. My house may be far from the picture-perfect example on the box, but c’mon. It’s pretty cute nonetheless. Plus, the process of designing and decorating was fun and almost nostalgic. I would definitely recommend this for your next Galentine’s Day party.

Surprisingly, the sugary glue held tight, and the house is sturdy and still standing.

I will admit, I took a bite out of the roof, and it was fairly tasty — a standard commercial shortbread cookie paired with sugar-loaded icing. For something I would consider intended more for decoration than for consumption, I’m impressed. Gingerbread houses taste like cardboard so this was a pleasant surprise.

My floor is, unfortunately, littered with sprinkles. But it’s worth the price for the cute little house. I am not going to lie, I felt so accomplished once I was done with the craft — I even took pictures and posted them to my Instagram story. The only thing missing is a cute little cookie Cupid to live inside.

It doesn’t take Cupid’s arrow to fall in love with this activity — festive, simply AND tasty. What’s not to like?
