The dreaded transition is upon us: that awkward moment between winter and spring when it’s too cold for tank tops but too warm for puffers. So what’s a girl to do? Look no further! I have compiled a list of my top 10 fashion predictions/continuations for the winter to spring transition.

We all know that “it’s all in the details,” so why not begin with accessories? My first prediction is wrap necklaces. Throughout winter, we saw a reemergence of the Y2K skinny scarves (you know, the ones that don’t do anything). So, as we move towards warmer weather, I believe that wrap necklaces will begin to appear more and more. Wrap necklaces are malleable and fun, and the perfect subtle statement piece to add to your jewelry lineup!

Staying on the topic of jewelry, I think mixed metals and funky, chunky statement pieces are here to stay. This style of jewelry will continue to move into the organic realm, featuring big bracelets and rings most specifically. So channel your inner Victoria Paris this spring and decorate those fingers and wrists.

I feel that it is impossible to discuss incoming trends without touching on leopard print. Everyone knows that leopard print is this season’s “color,” just as red was the color of winter. The pattern is emerging in dresses, pants, shoes and coats, and I must say that I am here for it! The key is to envision the pattern as neutral rather than a statement.

It only seems fitting that we now discuss fur coats. Whether you’re for or against the mob wife aesthetic, you have got to admit that (faux) fur coats have been serving up meals left and right. I think that, specifically transitioning into spring, this is a good option for a lighter weight layer, but still a warm jacket until those May flowers appear. Leopard print fur coats will also take a seat at the table this season, and I will most definitely be bringing my mom’s back with me after spring break!

The next big thing I have been seeing more and more of is denim. While leopard may be the “color” of the season, denim will be the “it” fabric. To clarify, when I say denim, I am not referencing typical jeans or jean jackets. I am referring to constructed denim and strong silhouettes. To get even more specific, denim sets. Brands such as Reformation, COS and GANNI have been marketing unique denim sets to get you through the last of your winter blues in style.

The past two years have been all about baggy and structured jeans, and we have seen it in many styles. But I fear that the reemergence of a slimmer cut may be in our future. No need to hide under your bed yet, skinny jeans are still hanging out in 2016. However a close-fit silhouette looms in the distance, but I think it will remain cool and classic. I believe that this began with the popularization of the suit and trouser pants that have come with the “office siren” aesthetic. Think straight leg, not skinny, to help calm your nerves.

On the topic of slightly nerve-racking leg wear, shave those calves (or don’t) because capris are coming in hot. Capris seem to continue on the path with femininity that we have seen so much of: think gingham, ruffles and lace for an embracement of femininity. Channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw!

I also think that this is going to be the year of the “eclectic grandpa” style. This style consists of lots of layering, and muted colors, like green, blue and red. The quintessential look may include a medium-wash pair of jeans, a funky sweater layered over a button-up and a gingham blazer on top. Don’t forget to layer your necklaces and pop in a funky earring.

A melody of girlhood and the eclectic grandpa, tuxedo/ruffle tops are going to be very popular this season. Brands including Citizens of Humanity and COS are leaning into the style. I think this is a new approach to feminizing traditionally masculine pieces, as well as emphasizing the intersection of femininity and masculinity. I love nothing more than seeing a ballet flat paired with a big, slouchy jean. These tops are going to be a fun way to elevate casual outfits and bring a new dimension to a traditional blouse.

Lastly, and this may seem painfully obvious, cardigans! I feel as though cardigans become super popular every year around this time, always presented in a slightly different way. This year, I predict the two styles we will see a lot of are preppy and fuzzy. We all know that this is supposed to be the year of prep. Think of Sophia Richie’s style, featuring big gold buttons and structured fabrics. In terms of fuzzy, we’re seeing a lot of slouchy, oversized looks, most particularly with one button done at the top. Cardigans are a great transitional piece, you can easily play with weight and warmth depending on the weather!

Keep these trends in mind as you shop for or pack up your spring clothes!
