How to Avoid the Cold When Everyone Around You is Sick

With the frigid New England weather comes the inevitable cold and flu season and the undeniable fact that everyone is at risk. Coming from the relatively small germ pools that were our respective high schools to living, eating and going to classes with thousands of different people means we as college students can’t escape the sniffles. We may think we can avoid it by overdosing on purell, not touching doorknobs or just staying inside curled up with food and netflix, but it is fruitless to deny the fact that the sickness will come. To be better prepared for when it does, channel your inner mom and follow some of these suggestions to reduce the symptoms and get better before infecting someone else.

  1. Be the most hydrated person on campus. You may have to go to the bathroom ten times a day but you wont regret it when you’re healthy.

  1. Take some medication and stay on top of it. I was personally drilled into taking Cold Eeze, a brand that claims to reduce the length of your cold, like they were candy but whatever works for you is fine.

  1. Eat comfort food like soup to help a sore throat. You may not be able to have mom’s chicken noodle, but anything else that can warm your heart will have a similar, positive effect.

  1. Sleep the sleep of the dead. No matter how much work you think you have to get done, doing so with a sick brain is a useless effort and you will write gibberish in that essay.

  1. Do your part to save others from the common cold. Although you may not be able to save everyone, going out of your way to wash your hands or not cough and sneeze all over everything will be mutually beneficial in the long run.
